Mould

Options
Hello all

6 months installed a shower tray and frame and sealed the tray with sealant. I used the unibond one.

Now, I can see mould growing on the sealant. The water is very hard where I live and the shower tray needs to be dried after every use or the water will leave a pink rough stains which do come of when I use the limescale remover.

Any ideas?

Usually you get mould that quick if you use cheap silicon or live in a really bad damp place.

What I would do is get rid of the old silicon and buy the proper stuff around £6-£8 compared with the cheap stuff at £4. I get mine from local hardware store and not rip off B&Q.

Failing that try the bleach spray you can get at supermarket its near the bleaches in a bright green bottle but be careful with it as it can stain clothes, and is bad if you got breathing problems, so keep windows open for 30min or so why you using it.

I would also when had a shower wipe the area clean if you get repeated problems and let air get to the area. Mold does well in damp warm areas.

p2601117_s.jpgEvo-Stik Sanitory Silicone Clear 310ml £4.74+p&p310ml. Suitable for shower, bath and kitchen use. More flexible and 30% stronger than traditional silicone. Easy to apply and clean. Water and power shower proof and mould resistant for a long lasting, durable seal.

The last silicon I bought had 15 year I think anti mould killer. Its harder in my opinion to put on as its more rubber feel, and have to clean residue with turps but the finish is better and of course the mould killer is far superior to the cheap stuff.
  • Thanks for all your comments.

I have used the uni-bond and paid £6 from b&q, it's supposed to do showers. bath and sinks.

I supose it's not good enough, any recomendations?

I asked a similar question a few months back and was recommended the Dow Corning sealant.

It's been in place for 6 months now and touch wood no mould as yet.

The only place I could find to buy the stuff was from Plumbcentre and it cost about £7.

It will certainly stop it if you wipe the sealant with neat bleach. I found it to be very good at removing mould from sealant. You may need to leave the bleach wet on it and repeat the application of it until the mould starts to subside.

Do you have a proper extractor fan in the room, which removes all the steamy air? Do you leave the shower door open to let air circulate?

I get algae growing in the shower (orange/pink colour) periodically. I just put diluted bleach in an old spray bottle and use that - no need to buy expensive custom stuff.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
  • Thanks guys

The diluted bleech works a treat! :xmassmile
