I found my email address listed on a website selling email addresses!!!

I didn't know where to post this and I know it's not money saving in the strictest sense, but it is if you're details are being passed around to unscrupulous companies trying con you out of money and/or cold call you (costs you if you miss a call and ring them back). Anyway I did a search on my email address as I was trying to find an old post I made on a website and I found that my email address came up on a website called https://www.emaildatalist.net‏. It was in amongst a huge list of other email addresses and it turns out the company sells off email addresses to anyone prepared to pay for them. I want my email address removed from their lists but I just wondering if anyone knew the law on this and what rights I have before I contacted them? Does anyone know....??

  • The company offering this seems to be based in Vietnam, so none of our laws are going to apply. I honestly doubt there is anything you can do.

Unfortunately email address harvesting and the resulting spam is a fact of life on the internet.

Much easier to abandon it and select a fresh email address they have no knowledge of.
  • Oh well, thanks for letting me know anyway! I don't want to abandon the email address as I have a ton of website logins linked to it and it would take me forever to change everything and I'm bound to forget something which could cause all sorts of hassle. I just hope it's only my email address floating around for sale and nothing more!!!
  • That's why you should open an outlook.com address.
You can have alias addresses so have a main yourname@outlook.com for banking, personal friends and such. Then create a new alias address called yournameforums@outlook.com which you can then use for signups.
  • I did try sorting aliases in outlook when it first came out but there were problems with it and I couldn't get it working. It appears to have been fixed now though so I'll try that route again. I had meant to try aliases again to so see the problem was fixed but had forgotten about them so thanks for reminding me!
  • I would suggest that searching for your own email address on that site is not to be recommended - it will almost certainly mean it gets included if it is not there at the moment...
  • Agreed! However I didn't actually search on that site, I did a google search and I noticed a link to that website in the results and then found my address on the page. It seems like you can't access the data via the website anyway, it appears you have to pay for the information. However they appear to have a loophole whereby you can access the information if you are able to obtain a direct link to the data.

Its probably caching the search data and adding it to the website search results.

Its like typing a phone number into google search you get the whocalled me type websites listing that number even though you maybe the only person searching a made up number for example.

Sometimes their site is a search engine also and uses your google search data to add to sites that google do not find.

    All clever stuff.

OH WOW... Just googled my old AOL usename and found several websites with it still showing. Someone copied the entire chatroom of text and pasted it up as ARTS??

  • Yeah, that makes sense actually, you could be right!
