Problems with BBC iplayer

Hi, I can't watch tv on my tv, only on my laptop as I don't have the correct aerial to get digital tv. I have to download programmes from BBC iplayer as when I try to watch programmes straight off the website, I keep getting the message that there is insufficient bandwidth.
I haver been unable to down load to iplayer desktop for a long time, there were problems with it which I couldn't seem to get round so all my downloads have been to windows media player. They have now taken that facility away. I have tried downloading the new BBCdownloads programme but not had any luck with that, probably due to the old one still being installed.
If I uninstall the old version of iplayer desktop, will I still be able to watch the programmes I downloaded to Windows media player?
Also, does anyone know if you need a tv licence to watch the shopping channels?
Thanks in advance.

  • The problem maybe your internet provider not iplayer.

Or you have left iplayer on the 2GB download limit. Set the limit higher.

depending where you are, a cheap set top aerial, may give you a freeview signal

what speed is your router syncing at

and what speed do you get on a tester http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics#results

removing the bell wire from the master socket may improve download speeds marginally

If you have downloads already in the Windows Media Player format then yes you can still watch them after uninstalling iplayer desktop.

I don't have iplayer desktop but watch the wmp versions without trouble since wmp and iplayer are two different things.

I am off to download the new BBC i player hope it's better than the old one!

You need a licence to watch any live TV. The channel is irrelevant.
There is no such thing as a 'digital aerial'.
Yo need a minimum line speed of around 2Mbps to stream from iPlayer.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Its changed and iplayer doesn't exist as it did. Its not that there isn't enough space for the programmes.
    Thanks anyway.

    Hi Closed,
I don't want to watch the programmes live as I am not usually in when they are on. I only ever watch programmes from iplayer.
Haven't a clue about the router syncing speed
On the test the speed came up as
Your available bandwidth is 2002 kbps.
    Thanks

The old one stopped working properly for me ages ago. I used to like to series record my favourite programmes but that stopped working. You can't download to media player now so I hope that the new version of iplayer works or that's me finished with tv I guess.

I don't have a licence as the tv licencing people told me not to bother getting one being as I can't get a proper signal. I don't watch any live tv at the moment. I just wondered if it would be alright to watch shopping channels as they were not actually programmes as such. No big deal, I don't watch them at the moment.
  • Hi,

there always seemed to be a problem with BBC iplayer after any updates with Adobe Air, I think it was called, either downloading or losing already downloaded programmes.

That's why they brought out the newer simpler version, BBCi Downloads, no series record nor WMP option, just download.

If you go to BBCi and choose a programme to download, it will then take you through the installation process,

If you use Firefox, it might give you a 'choose' option at some point, just accept what's offered.

Of course they are programmes! If you watch them live, you need a licence. if you watch them on delay, you don't.
