I was talking to BT earlier and they said I would have to transfer to BT broadband and then upgrade to fibre once transferred.
The person I was talking to did not know much about this and was told by someone in the background.
Is it necessary to transfer broadband first then upgrade?
She did say the transfer would be free and no contract as long as I upgraded by certain date.
I have not transferred but just wondered.

Yes, because 02 don't offer FTTC. Sky do, so you might do better considering them.
You will most certainly be in a contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I went from O2 (conventional) BB to BT Infinity (fibre) in one step. Totally painless. Went from a very poor service, below 1mb at (too many) times to 75mb.0

If you have your line rental and broadband with O2 then you can't migrate straight to BT Infinity. You will have to move the line back to BT first which takes 11 working days then move the broadband.
Or do as BT advisor suggested move both line and broadband together on to adsl then upgrade to fibre.0
