I vote for keeping the fake tree, but getting a tiny real tree, or even just a real pine wreath.
We get a wreath and keep it flat on the coffee table (around a big fat red candle) then the whole room smells of pine needles.

You can get very realistic, luxury artificial trees for not too much money, if you just wanted a change.

I've never had a real tree, although I know people who do have them. Personally I'd choose a fake tree and have never wanted a real one. There'll just be needles everywhere getting in your feet, and you can't put it up until a few days before, and you've got to go and buy one every year, and they're a sod to make stand up properly. And I've never been a huge fan of the smell of pine anyway. And there might be scary many-legged creatures run out of them.

And I just like the look of fake ones better, they look bushier, the real ones often seem a bit baldy to me.

I always had a real tree growing up and I used to love going out with my Dad each year to pick one. Now my fianc! and I rent, we have an artificial tree. We bought a Christmas tree scented candle from Sainsbury's last year though so we faked the smell!

We have 4 trees in my house, my kids have one each in their bed rooms and have their own special decs to put on them ( my kids are 14 and nearly 16) and many of their decs hold special memories and some they made themselves. I buy candy canes and chocolate decs for them too. We have a fake one in the dining room and a real one in the lounge which I always decorate in all silver and white. Last year we were away for 2 weeks over Xmas so had a fake one in the lounge but it wasn't the same.

:xmastree:We have a fake 7ft tree which we have had for a few years but we also have a real one.
This started as a 12inch twig distributed by works photocopier paper supplier around 8 years ago this is now a gorgeous bushy tree in our front garden and stands at around 5 foot now and we hang solar lights on this every year.
I don't think I could bring myself to bring it indoors but there's nothing quite like the smell of a real Christmas tree.

I have a big, bushy, snowtipped artificial tree.I love it and have always had artificial.

Don't want pine needles all over and our tree has to go up on 1st December as per our tradition :)

But there will be a real tree in the front garden covered in solar lights and one or two mini real trees, decorated in pots and used indoors aswell.Just need to decide where to put them!

I've never experienced a real christmas tree, so to me, I don't have the 'Christmassy smell' association...

We also have a slimline fake tree due to lack of space due to our house rabbits cage, however I will be buying a full size one when he goes.

Personally, I like my tree up through the whole of December so I'm not sure a real tree would still be looking so good come the 25th....although I do love the idea of going out and choosing the tree...

Dh had a real tree once before we met, he said it was far too much hassle and mess, although he can be a bit of a Scrooge about that sort of thing.

We had the same tree for years growing up, and even though it looked a bit tatty at the end, it was still 'our' Christmas tree and I remember crying when we binned it xx

  • Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied to this thread. After much discussion we have decided to keep and continue with our fake tree. Our son has never known any different and it is his tradition we are building now. The tree has stuff on it from our lives together and its own history.

Good call. Now I can enjoy fireworks first, then start looking forward to crimbo!

  • For the first 25 years of my life, we had a real Christmas tree. The weekend before Christmas I used to go with my dad and brother and disagree over which one we wanted! Then we'd put it up and I'd normally decorate it. Mum doesn't have time close to Christmas (due to business) so it was my job to make the house Christmassy. A couple of years ago we decided to buy a fake one due to the increasing price of real ones and although it didn't feel the same, I still made it look gorgeous and Christmassy but I do miss a real tree and the real tree smell.

The one advantage is, I don't have to wait til the weekend before Christmas and it can go up earlier!!!
