Has to be a real one here as well.
OH grew up on fake trees and never bothered with one when he was with his first wife. As soon as it was our first christmas here, he insisted on a real one and we have had one ever since and he decorates it.0 -
Fake tree for me, as I'm almost totally unable to smell. That said, any attempt at artificial pine-y goodness & I think the lads would think I'd spilled bleach somewhere.
We have other Christmas smells - beeswax candles, ginger cordial, cinnamon & nutmeg biscuits....0 -
Real
Yes, they are costly. But its once a year. I love going out to the local forest and picking one out of hundreds, trying to balance it in the holder, the smell is amazing and they look so much nicer.
We have a fake one at work and I hate it. Every year I get it out and it smells dusty. I don't enjoy putting it up whatsoever.
I always pick trees that don't drop their needles. Yes, they all drop some but some are much worse than others. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I just love the smell of a real tree but last year a bought it so early it was half dead by Christmas, my wife is pushing for a fake tree this year!0

Never had a real tree. As a child or adult.
I have young children so probably won't, plus I think I like my artificial one...
But, if its really captured your imagination then go for it!Bossymoo
Away with the fairies :beer:0 -
We had a really nice fake one for several years because we lived in a flat and needed slim tree, when we moved into the house we said we would always have real ones.
I do prefer real trees (the look and the smell especially) but nice ones are expensive and last year as we were away for Christmas and New Year so we had the fake one. Neither of us particularly liked it, and I really hope that we can have a real one again this year (tho it depends on hubby getting a new job: if not then we're going to have to be "sensible" again).0 -
I love the smell of a real tree, but Mrs E and I will be using the beautiful fake one we got last year for decades to come as 1) it was rather dear and 2) I'd feel like a git for binning a 7' plastic and wire tree! :rotfl:0

Hi southern dave, I would (and do ) keep a variety of fake trees depending on my mood for that year
however a real tree even if not every year creates fantastic memories. We still talk about the year dh was let loose alone to buy a tree, with the instructions to not come back with a tiddler. The tree that had to be delivered by the farmers truck was 12 ft high and had to be chopped almost in half to fit in our tiny cottage (a la national lampoons xmas vacation!) it was so big we had to move our dining table and chairs into the garden for the two weeks before Xmas and you had to barge past it to reach the kitchen , therefore dropping needles every time. The kids don't remember much as they were very small but they know of the legend of the huge tree :rotfl:
Go on buy one this year! :xmastree:MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0 -
We have a really nice fake, pre-lit tree, but if I had the room would go for a real one instead. My friend gets a real one delivered from Scotland every year and its always gorgeous.
If you have the room you could stick with your fake one, but get a small real one in a tub, that in January you put in the garden and next Dec just bring the pot back inside!
