SAORSAT in NI

We're using Freesat and are very happy with it but we'd also like to be able to receive RTE, even if we have to pay a subscription. Can anyone tell me if and how I can achieve this? Is it a reasonable expectation?

Ballyblack, you're the man who knows these things - educate me please. :)

I get RTE 1 &2 and Tg4 on free to air Uk Freeview thru the aerial (not freesat)

Divis Mountain is the transmitter I use (retransmitted from RTE)

You just need a good aerial & a freeview box that decodes the signal, not all freeview boxes do. Ask your supplier

This is the model I got, works perfectly well

I believe some of the latest TV's have got the correct decoder built in so need for a decoder (freeview box)

Sorry I don't use Freesat, so can't comment on it

I guess you would have to be in or near the border area to get Saorview or Saorsat in NI

I've got it in the bedroom ok on Freeview using a Humax box but I've disconnected the aerial feed in the lounge because splitting the signal has proved to be a bad idea in this property; and that's with an aerial amplifier fitted.

The lounge has a Humax Freesat box (MPEG4) so I'm hoping we could perhaps purchase a subscription to get a feed into that? Can't see an obvious card slot on the box though.

the Irish word for free is Saor if that's a clue???

( the cost is paid by the tv licence payer same as freeview here)

Ah yes. I hadn't considered that. So perhaps there is no provision for subscription?

You may need to get a good aerial man to have a look at your set up GlynD. New direct cabling & aerial worked for me.

I've had one in. Reception in the bedroom was poor and I thought it was because of the trees behind the house. That chap has corrected me on that - the trees are in the wrong direction to affect reception from the Black Mountain. I also had excess cabling; he dealt with that for me. It is a new cable.

His comments were that the signal is fair belting into the aerial and removing the excess cabling helped reception in the bedroom but oddly it's still not at full pelt as he indicated it should be. He says our aerial is fine. In view of all this I don't want to split the signal again because I'll finish up with two TV's getting poor reception.

That's why I'm playing with the idea of trying to get Saorsat as well as Freesat.

Problem with the RTE transmissions in NI - some stuff isn't broadcast due to licensing restrictions - football matches etc, but this would be the simplest solution - maybe a booster could be installed.
Freesat - no, there's no system to subscribe to anything.
Soarsat - don't know which satellite this is broadcast from, or whether there are any restrictions on it...

You can pick up Soarsat in Belfast.
You need a special lnb for your dish and a new decoder box.
There is no TV3 on Soarsat but you will get the RTE channels

    Ah, a glimmer of light!

If it can be got in Belfast that means it can be got elsewhere. I just need to find me a man who knows what he's doing! :)
