New budget smartphone - decent deals?

I'm looking for a budget smartphone to upgrade an existing knackered PAYG - needs to have GPS and be OK for web access. The Nokia 520 looks OK at the moment, but open to other suggestions!

The Nokia was previously an in-store deal for those upgrading PAYG phones at CPW - anyone know if this is still running? Otherwise, is £7/month on contract with enough minutes for me http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/mobile-phone/contract/talkmobile/nokia/Nokia-Lumia-520-Black.html?network=talkmobile&tariffcode=TKMKM128&clickref=MSE&awc=2351_1380370136_2dacbc931bf2cb204b7c62f1cd9e2e19

  • I'm using a Symbian phone at the moment, so don't have a particular preference for Windows/Android. I'll just be using web for browsing (will be able to use wifi to download) so don't think I'll go over 250MB?

do you use any data on your phone now? 250mb really isn't a lot, even if you're just browsing and not downloading you might regularly go over 250mb in a month.
  • Don't use any data atm - web access on the phone has been broken for a year or so :) Makes it a bit harder to judge likely use if I get something that does work, I guess...
  • If 250MB comes at the best price you could always go for it and make use of Data Sense on the 520 so you know when you have hit your limit. I wouldn't go with it if the options with the same network giving 500MB+ cost a lot more though. If it works out £1 or £2 more for 500-1024MB I would consider taking one of those. Newer phones have bigger screens, faster connections and generally use more data and low costing deals are often a way to get users who need more to sign up as they will increase their tariff through the minimum term.

Dont forget a smart phone will have email and weather apps. So it maybe checking the internet more than you think.

Visit another town and open the browser and it knows where you are.

I disabled the wifes internet on her old nokia C6. Then suddenly one night at around 3am its started connecting to the internet.
It would connect every few minutes.

I took it into a shop and they said i probably didnt disable it all. So they went through the settings. Err hang on.. Had to get the techie guy out to have a look..
Err yes.. I said its all blocked isnt it. But its still connecting.

They were stumped and rather than have to keep refunding every month they added the internet for free.

Agree with other posters, 250mb is nowhere enough for a modern smartphone, ESPECIALLY if you are committing to a 2 year contract with this paltry level of data. Personally I would buy the Y300 outright from CPW for £70 (works out at less than £3/mth over the course of 24 months) and have a look for one of the huge number of superb value 30 day commitment SIM only deals to use it with (there's even one that has a monthly cost of nowt!!). AFAIA all PAYG phones from CPW are SIM free as standard. This approach just gives you so much more control over your mobile needs.
