Ebay dispute help

I sold a mint condition Pioneer dj controller on ebay in August. THe item was in mint condition, hardly used, and well packaged when I sent it with Parcelforce. It was signed for on 21/08/2013.
On 25/09/2013 I received an email to say the buyer had set up a dispute and is requesting a full refund. He claims that when he tried to use the item it didn't work and that he took it to a Pioneer dealer for repair. He claims they told him it will need a whole new board at £245 plus other expenses, and that it could only have happened from over use and neglect. This is rubbish.
I have replied twice, repeating that this item was in mint condition when I sent it, and that he had never at any point contacted me up until now. I don't see why I should refund for something that somebody may have opened up and tampered with, instead of contacting me at the time. I have requested to see the report and said that I wouldnt pay any refund without getting the unit back, but I'm scared that ebay will find in his favour and refund him and just steal the money from my bank account.
What should I do?

Perhaps, but it was in prefect working condition when I sent it. I accpet that it may have been damaged in transit, but why didn't he come to me first instead of getting somebody to take it apart and then contact me five weeks later?0

If it was your own, and you can say hand on heart , it worked that's one thing, but if you bought it and resold it , it may have looked mint, but wasn't.0

It was my own, and my hand is on my heart. Can we get past this point and please only respond if you can answer the question about somebody taking the unit apart before contacting to say it doesn't work?

E-bay will give him his money back, this is why people are bailing out of E-bay and use it for buying only.Be happy...;)0

And.. Has he actually said he wants a refund without sending it back?
eBay cases don't specify this.0 -
He didn't specify but I stated that he shouldn't be entitled to one without sending it back. However if he simply didn't know how to use it (IT based product), and opened it up and broke it himself, very unfair for me now to get back a damaged item. Have been buying and selling on ebay since they started and have never felt so vulnerable.0

Very unfair for him to have a product that doesn't work, who knows who's correct. Speak to the pioneer engineer on the phone.you can then ask the engineer if he took it apart, or if the buyer had already taken it apart, as you seem to be doing a lot of guessing .i guess there's a world of difference between something sold for£ 30 or £350 as to how the buyer would approach it.0
