Your statement about the speeds that you should get is factually incorrect but there is no point arguing with you as you think that you are right!

    :p

So your point on these boards is to post and give no help at all but to point out that other people who are giving help are wrong even when they are correct, just to show that your some kind of smart alec but are in actual fact not helpful at all, if you wish to add something to a thread may I suggest its something worth while and not a load of dribble.

And my statement is wrong? well as seeing as I got the speeds from adslguide you had better email them and you can have a nice chat with the site developers and tell them how right you are and put them in their place.
  • You're both right - and it's down to the way that the information is presented on thinkbroadband/adsl guide.

I've had a look at the thinkbroadband/adsl speed test and what they're quoting is factual statement "with 8Mb speeds" you should be getting 7250 Kbps download and 400 - 757 upload. The thing is that I don't think that there are any ISPs that offer a fixed rate of 8Mb (we can do 2Mb, 1Mb, 512Kbps and 256Kbps fixed rate products).

When services are advertised as "Speeds up to 8Mb" then the speed that you get will be determined by the physical length of line running between your home and the exchange in addition to other factors such as your line quality. The majority of people on products that advertise 'speeds up to 8Mb' will achieve a stable speed less than 8Mb. The speed breakdown estimate for customers across the UK who are with an Internet Service Provider who offers speeds up to 8Mb is:

40% of customers will get a connection speed that is above 6Mb
    35% get between 4Mb and 6Mb
    15% get between 2Mb and 4Mb
10% get a connection speed of up to 2Mb

It can also factor on weather conditions as rain and dampness has an affect (how I dont know) also actual quality of cabling aswell, mind you im with Virgin so I none of theese worries :D

I did actaully post a factual statemnet as I didnt want to just pull some figures out of the air and lead anyone down the garden path.

Also the most likely causes are damaged house wiring, or use of the wrong type of cable for house wiring anything that causes the modem lines to be unbalanced will cause them to pick up "crosstalk" from the other lines examples would be defective telephone sets, corrosion on terminal, staples through the cable, broken insulation allowing contact with other wires or objects, kinks in the wire, and/or being damp. ( a phone call I just made to my mate whos a BT engineer) :)
  • However - my last post doesn't really help the OP. Sorry Wurlzelsar!

It would be in my opinion that if you are getting download speeds of 153 Kbps on a service that's meant to be up to 8Mb - then something is wrong with the picture.

If I can ask a few questions:

    1. How far have you gone with troubleshooting with Talk Talk? Have you tested for faulty filters? Have they looked at your sync?

    2. What is the modem/router model that you're using?

I know that I'm going to sound like a broken record because I do post this a lot in the forums:

Speeds up to 8Mb are VERY sensitive to internal wiring. You should be connecting the router from the master socket and have 1 microfilter fitted to every phone socket that is in use.

    Kind regards,

    Hello again. :)
  • Hi Asos,
I did actually post a factual statemnet as I didnt want to just pull some figures out of the air and lead anyone down the garden path

I apologise - in my first post regarding the thinkbroadband speed test I really should have said:

"they're quoting is a definitive statement"

    and not

    "they're quoting is factual statement"

What you said is indeed factual! It's just the source of the information was being definitive in the way that they were presenting information.

    Kind regards,
    Samara

The reason that I posted was because the information that you gave was not helpful as it was incorrect:

Why do you think that your post was helpful, stating that the OP should get a speed of 7150Kbps when they are extremely unlikely to ever achieve this speed!

If you visit this webpage you will see the speed averages for various IPS's on max ADSL for last month. These are compiled from actual speed test results and are not a theoretical maximum figure.

what sort of modem/router do you have?

if you can get your line stats from it we can probably see if you are getting poor speed due to a problem on your line.

Have you recently moved the pc and installed/changed an extension lead?

Have you added any new phones to your house (inc. sky boxes etc...)
