Broadband speed - can someone explain please?

Could someone please advise me on broadband speeds?
My internet connection is running very slow.
I have done a speed test which someone recommended but as a non-techie have no idea what it means.
I think my broadband connection is to blame. It should be an 8 meg speed that I have.
This is the result that I had earlier today.
Can anyone help please?

I can help, use this speedtest http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ as its much easier to use but yep your connection is pretty poor
For an 8meg connection you should get a speed of 7150Kbps for download and 400-756kbps upload.0 -
Thanks.
I've just run that test and the results are very similar........
download 131 kb/s
upload 376 kb/sI wish you......

Actually, your connection is described as 'up to 8 MB' Most people don't get the full bandwith.
Saying that, it's very unusual that your upload speed is better than your download connection.
A call to your ISP is in order.
Who are they?

Thanks guys..........and Donnie..........
I'm blushing as I write this...................YES!!
I know now!!
It's been fine for the last 7 months but the broadband and phone lines for the whole of our town went down on monday and it hasn't been the same since it came back on.
I can't get anyone to listen to me at talktalk though.I wish you......

Maybe you can do a 'live-chat' with someone at Opal Telecom; http://www.opal-solutions.com/internet/
Never had to deal with Talk Talk, so can't suggest much.0 -

That is a rather silly statement to make, as there are lots of factors that will affect max ADSL speed. Only a very small percentage of users will actually achieve those quoted speeds and they are certainly not the norm!

I expect John Presscott is ordering his dinner and is using up all the bandwidth, lol.0

talk talk is well known for the "quality" of their customer service. More than likely normal service will be resumed "soon". You might get more info from BT, but I wouldn't bet on it.
My 1MB connection measured @ 849KBps down / 267 up"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Maybe You should get in contact with http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html and tell them that all their info is wrong, anyone with any sense would ofcourse take into factors of exchange distance etc etc.
Please research before posting and using stupid smileys to get your incorrect point across.0 -

Your statement about the speeds that you should get is factually incorrect but there is no point arguing with you as you think that you are right!
