    They will be shareholders too.
And if they do strike its only a backlog of mail - not like the lights going out, a run on petrol stations, or passengers stranded.
A strike could soon backfire on them when they lose public support (very important when you meet the public every day) - especially since the popular press will likely point out their employment conditions are already far better than RM competitors.
    'they' have it?

    Not quite,

Over the past 3 years royal mail have scrapped the bikes so you now have 2 posties sharing a van, so they are already able to deliver more parcels as they have more vans.

How does that work in cities like London where parking a delivery van is a serious/expensive problem?

Im no union fan, however the drag on performance comes from the management as much if not more than any union influence
    I'm undecided on that one.
The EEC country with the strongest unions is Germany, and it doesn't seem to drag on their performance. But then Germany is a far more egalitarian country, so less of a 'them and us' confrontational style. Hopefully the free shares for employees will go some way to alleviate this.

Where I live they do. Although you don't get to know your postman like you used to because they seem to change so often.
But if they went on strike, people waiting for mail, the right wing press pointing out they were already better paid than their competitors, plus defined benefit pensions the overwhelming majority of private sector employees can only dream of, and stamp prices could rise again, they could lose public support.

In Edinburgh RM have a deal with the council
so you can(to a point) dump/park your van in most places
It will be the same pretty much everywhere
however,IME the planners who design(ha!) duties dont really worry about parking.
They simply state you will park in X spot, regardless of practicalities

What competitors are they better paid than?
The defined benefit pension is gone and the old pension is once more under proposal for change.
Stamp prices will rise whether RM staff strike or not
Were people behind the staff in previous strikes?

Can RM be regarded as a utility in the same way as gas and electricity?

Hmmm. Gas and electricity companies have got us by the b*llocks because we need them to invest in more infrastructure and power stations as the old ones are worn out. (Milliband appears to have simply ignored this)
Its hard to see any similar grip on us that Royal Mail has?

The couriers and parcels delivery companies apparently.

In that case I can see the other private courier companies screaming 'unfair competition' I have read stories of courier companies putting a surcharge on deliveries like Westminster because of the cost of parking fines. Parking is different in Scotland. There was even a case of a courier getting wheelclamped on a private industrial estate and charged £800 for release, when wheelclamping was illegal in Scotland.
