How to Connect Internet to a Humax Youview Box?

Hey!

I'm hoping this is in the right place and somebody has come across this before and can help. I'm posting this for my dad so I actually have no idea what I'm talking about :D

We have a Humax Youview DTR T1000 unit and would like to connect the Internet to it. Our understanding of how to do this is limited.

We've looked on the Internet and there doesn't appear to be a compatible dongle. Linking the wireless router to the Humax unit by a cable is impractical because the router is near the front door and the Humax unit is on the other side of the house by the TV. The router used to live next to the TV but then we struggled to get Internet upstairs (where it's used most) so we moved it.

The other option appears to be a 'powerline adapter' but we're not sure what they do/how to use it/how to tell if it's compatible with the Humax unit.

Does anybody have any advice on the best thing to do? Is there an idiot's guide to powerline adapters somewhere? Is there another alternative? Thank you if you for any advice :)

Yes, use Homeplugs/powerline adaptors (same thing). They're completely compatible. No guide needed: you plug them into the wall sockets, connect the short ethernet cables supplied, and they work. You'll need 2 plugs (one for the router, one for the Hummy), so buy a starter kit of 2.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • This should let you grasp the concept of powerline/homeplugs:

Alternatively you could use a wifi access point client (aka wireless gaming adapter} to connect wirelessly to your router. In the following diagram you would replace the Xbox connections with your Humax.

move the router back to next to the tv, wire it into the humax, and resolve the wireless upstairs problem

    which router is it

  • Wow, so many replies. Thank you for answering so promptly.

I've shown them the responses and they've decided to go for a homeplug or powerline adapter. They're now asking if anybody has any recommendations for which one to get (one might be a soul line or something?), and where is best to buy them from. It'll be sod's law that Poundland would sell one that does the same job as one from PC World.

The Humax box is from Plusnet. We left Sky in early September and have had so many problems with the Humax box but that's another thread :)

I've also been informed that the signal issue has nothing to do with upstairs, it's actually because the phone line comes through the wall by the front door and it gets a better signal there. To move the router to the TV would mean a cable going over the front door, all the way down the hall, through the wall or doorway and across the living room. I'm assuming the old Internet must have come through the Sky box or something.

you could always wait for youview to pull their finger out and produce a wireless dongle for it, lack of wireless capability is bound to be affecting sales.

    or

secrete a cat5 cable under the carpet from the router to the humax, no power required.

    Hi chewynut,

If Plusnet supplied your box if you ring them and explain your dads situation they *may* supply you with two PLA's for free, or possibly discounted.
  • They've ordered something off of Amazon. Thank you all for the advice :)
