I have owned the car from new and never put any air in them ....
The wheels have locks on them - so nobody could have replaced them....

You haven't put any air in them in over two years?

I take it you have checked the pressures?

    October 2011 !!
That is correct - my car is serviced annually and they check the tyres at this time
I have never had to top this car up with air
The pressure is still 36 front 32 rear....

How often do you use the car?

The issue is perishing rubber in any case - which Honest John confirms does happen in substandard tyres !!

If you have never adjusted your tyre pressures, then in hot weather the pressure may be too high, and in winter the pressures could be too low. So this combined with very low mileage, meaning that the rubber doesn't get to flex much, can cause perishing with some makes of tyres.

You will often notice this on cars that don't get used for two or three years. Even if the tyres were new, they will often still perish due to lack of use. Michelins used to be terrible for this.

50mpg average from an automatic can't be bad though !!

    Depends on the car?

Having to put air into tyres because it is Winter, that is funny.

No, it is common sense. Air pressure increases and decreases with temperature.

So - do you also release some air in spring ?

If not - and there is no leak (as in my case) - surely your tyres will eventually explode through over-inflation ?

Yes you do. You should check your tyre pressures weekly, and adjust them accordingly.

For the last time - I do check regularly and they stay the same....

After reading more posts I see that you haven't adjusted the pressures to allow for the temperature.

You obviously don't. It has been discussed in depth, that the pressure will reduce in cold weather, and increase in hot weather.

It's no good just checking them, but never adjusting them.
