Long time lurker, first time poster here.
Martin, should you read this, I really appreciate the compendium of information you've put together here, and also to the great community that appears always willing to help!
Now, my turn for some assistance, if you please!
I am trying to get myself my first CC, and as such I doubt I'd be able to "tart" my way through the next few years with such a neutral / negative score.
As such, I've tried the Barclaycard and AMEX blue recommended on the Credit Card for Spending article for "stable relationships", to build my credit score until I'm ellgible to "tart" myself I'm still too young to apply for the Barclaycard, and AMEX rejected me. Any care to suggest any others?
I am yet to try the Halifax One card, would that be a good idea? I'm reluctant to go mad and try everyone now as I don't wish to damage my rating.
Your help is much appreciated!

Welcome to MSE
You need to have a stable relationship with your bank and then apply for one of their cards ,ensure you are on the voters list(electoral roll) with your council. There are also other factors that assist in getting the card of your choice including how long you have lived at an address and the wages you earn,married/single,home owner and age.
To build up your standing with your bank request a small loan £500-ish put it in your savings account for a month and then hand it back in effect settling the loan. You could keep it for longer but you will incure interest and you will have to meet the monthly payments and there is the chance you will spend it! Only do this if you are sure you won't spend it.
You could try Sainsbury's or Tesco credit cards as they may be more inclined to give you a card as they will want you to use it in their stores.
Whatever you decide pay it off in full each month and aim to pay no interest or fees.
Good luck.Previously known as Bokken, registered at MSE in Nov 04,computer glich deleted my access but it is fun building up my stars from scratch,again.:D0 -

Many thanks for your help. I applied for a Post Office CC as I am going to be spending a lot of time (and money) abroad in the coming months, and it makes sense for the 0% commision. I used quidco and it has been validated etc., so I have a feeling I've been accepted. Instead of taking out the loan and giving it back, should I just build up a rating using the Post Office one, then try again towards the end of the summer when I should have kept on top of my payments and should qualify for a better card?
Chars!
