Post Office Unwilling To Compensate

HI

Im looking for some help please

Back in May this year I sold a phone on ebay and this was purchased by a guy in italy, I posted the item and when at the post office I told them what was in the package and also how much it was worth.. They advised me to pay extra postage. Which I did.

The item went missing in transit.. They buyer reported this to the police he recieved a empty ripped parcel.

I made a claim against royal mail but they will only pay out upto £50 and as I was advised that I was given the wrong information by post office then they are to payout on the insurance from there.

The post office i have contacted and they have said "well we asked the post office submaster and he thinks that his staff have not ill advised you so we are not paying you the money"

I am now £350 out of pocket. What can I do and who can I make a claim to?

Post office problem aside, you do know this is a well know ebay scam? Don't ever post phones overseas unless you can verify the receiver.

  • TBH the seller was verified. He went to the police he even telephoned me. So I have no concernes on that. I even have the police report regarding this

How much insurance did you take out with the post office?

Did you block the phone after it went "missing"?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • Yeah phone was blocked.

I paid for the phone to be insured upto £350. Which is what the cost was.

Any ideas on where I should go from here

I'm struggling to follow this - if you actually DID pay for insurance of £350 why are they refusing to compensate you ? Or is it that you THOUGHT you had paid for that but in fact were given something that only provided maximum cover of £50.

If you paid £12.85, then you got cover for up to £500, provided you declared the correct value on the paperwork.
    (that's according to here: http://www.royalmail.com/price-finder )

...but without know how much you paid and what you paid for, it's hard to say. What does your receipt from the post office say?

  • Royal Mail only cover mobile phones upto £50....

The Post Office are at fault.. I paid for International Signed for postage.. Which is what the counter staff told me to get... I paid extra for the INSURANCE of the item because the standard cover of International Signed for is only £250...I paid extra to cover me upto a total of £350.

I have contacted the post office. They are telling me that the do not insure mobile phones in the International Signed for service... (this is the service I was advised on) AND also that the counter staff would not have recomneded this service to me ( i told them it was a mobile phone and the member of staff told me that i should pay extra insurance to cover the item)
  • The reciept says that its covered upto £350... at no point was I told that this would not cover a mobile phone

Yes, you're right - ignore what I said above.

I tend to use parcelmonkey for my deliveries

  • The last letter from the post office says.;.

I have spoken with the submaster and I have recieved a written response stating hat none of the branch assistants can remember the transaction, The subpostmaster has assured me thatall staff are aware of the maximum compensation when sending mobile phones abroad..

This was not told to me and I was just told to pay the extra coverage
