Water coming out the top of cistern.

Options
As title really. Flushed the loo this morning and water started dripping out the top of the cistern. It was fine last night too. Whats wrong and is it easily fixed?

Is the ballcock stuck allowing water to continually flow in. If so, pull it upwards gently until the water stops coming in.
  • No sure but took the cistern lid of and flushed too see what was happening and the water that comes from the pipe to fill the cistern was coming out pretty fast and it is that whats causing the leek. Water pressure too high ?
  • If you pull the arm that the ballcock is on upwards does the flow stop?
  • It does stop.
  • For the time being try and put something across the cistern to hold the ballcock arm up and stop the water coming in.

It may just be the arm that needs adjusting or the ballcock may have split and be full of water or something may have broken.

Is there not an overflow in the cistern, a white pipe sticking upwards into the cistern in one corner?
  • Yes, thats the pipe I was talking about, wasnt sure what it was called, the water rushes out of it when the toilet flushes and the water just comes straight over the the cistern cause its coming out quite strong/fast.

Above is a link to a picture of a cistern, are you sure water is coming from the overflow (labelled on the photo) because that shouldn't be connected to water source.
  • Not sure (tried to upload pics from photobucket but wouldn't let me)

The water is coming from the pipe with the arm and ballcock on it on the right hand corner of the cistern. The water comes out when I press down on the arm slightly too.

That's what it's supposed to do-it's responding to the drop in water level. But when the float reaches a certain height, it should cut off. Every cistern has (or should have) a overflow pipe, so in the event of the valve failing to cut off the supply, it runs to waste and doesn't flood over. Do you have such an overflow, and if so is it working?

I'm not sure it does have a overflow. It has the valve in the second picture in the link but that's it I think, it doesn't seem to have the overflow as shown in the first picture.

The water only comes out the pipe when the toilet is flushed (it stops once the toilet has stopped flushing)but it is angled straight towards me so the water is just gushing up and out the cistern. I've put a small plastic cup in it just now to redirect the water, short-term, and it's stopped the water leaking out for now.

Will the whole tank need replacing if it doesn't have an overflow?
