vw key

hi, i have vw golk mk5. When I bought it 2 1/2 years ago i only got 1 key and the fob didn't work, so i've just been manually opening/locking the car.
Does anyone know how much £ i'll be talking about for a new reprogrammed key fob?

(I once bought a key from ebay, swapped the blade to my own and thought I could reprogram myself but could only ever find instructions that needs a 2nd key)

Sorry don't know how much it costs to have one reprogrammed. But did the owner not have the second key? How damaged is the remote fob, have you looked into repairing that? For what it's worth and if you can make sense of it, have a look at this http://vorsicht.org.hk/forums/archive/index.php?t-1819.html
  • thanks for replying!!
no the owner only had one key as well, he discounted the price at the time because of this. I've started to look into it twice before but have always had other bills to pay.

I'll have a proper look at the link, but as far as i know (and correct me if i'm wrong!) but the transponder is working it seems to be the transmitter, ie the actual buttons i've had problems with.

To be honest the instructions on the link are too complicated for my own taste ;) . I would imagine though that a new key from a dealer would be in the region of £100?
  • yeah programming takes two keys for obvious reasons. you have to have one working key inserted into drivers door and then you insert the blank into ignition barrell.

You'll be lucky! I think the key is about £130 and then they'll charge another £50 to programme it.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • just got 2 quotes, basically £220. £130 for the key and £90 for programming.

Don't think I'm gunna get it any cheaper, so I may start saving! lol.
    Thanks for all the replies!
  • Hey, just reread your thread.

I have a mk4 golf and unlike other keys you can take the whole thing apart and replace the cr2032 battery without resetting or damaging anything. I routinely chage the batteries so I can unlock and lock the car 15 meters away (the battery drains fast because the buttons get pressed while in the pockets).

Do a research on a mk5 golf forum and see if you can change the batteries without breaking anything.

When you have one working key you should be able to reprogrogamme a new blank.

I have 3 keys for my golf because the tang broke off on one and I just built another key using a standard key cutting service and moving the transporter and computer onto the new key.

Hi, my existing key just won't work. I've replaced the batteries about 4 times just incase I got a dodgy batch or something.
Just looks like i'm not going to be that lucky!

    Thanks for replying though!

 Hope the previous owner gave you a good discount for his golf with a dodgy key and no second key!
