Now, are you REALLY 100% sure that it didn't prompt you?

Having set up hundreds of laptops in my time - Sony's included, I have never come across one relatively modern machine that didn't ask you to create recovery disks or equivalent at least once when setting up. I'd be surprised - as will Currys and the manufacture - if yours is the exception.

Unfortunately, your options are limited. It's almost certainly software related, but if you want to force Currys to act, you will need to get an independent report to say the laptop is inherently faulty (and that almost exclusively means hardware). You will have to pay for this report though, and claim a refund if the report does come back with an inherent fault.

If the report says software, you're out of pocket for the report and the additional £50 you need to pay to fix it.

Bearing in mind you are running a machine without any Anti Virus or Internet Security, it's highly likely to be a software fault, so your easiest fix is to pay the £50.

Most windows 8 computers don't give you the auto prompt to create recovery media that you got in vista and windows 7. There are a few that do but they are few and far between.

They do usually tell you in the quick start guide in the box though, and I haven't seen one that doesn't.

Have Currys or Sony actually physically checked the laptop? If they have and say it's software then it probably is, if they haven't then it could be a hard drive fault, running the recovery would tell you one way or the other.

In Sony Vaio's which I have used, there is generally a Utility recovery area, found by typing into Start.

I know that Windows 8 is much different to Windows 7, but you should be able to find the Utility section and 'recover' from there.

    Good luck

Really useful when the machine won't even boot to Windows in safe mode.
