Thank you for your comments so far. We have noticed a number of your comments focus on the PHSO complaints process and timescales:

Cherrink said that it was “not at all clear” and swingle said that “It took ages for the PHSO to react in the first instance”.

We would like to ask everyone: how does PHSO complaint and investigation process compare with other organisations that you have made a complaint to? Can you give examples of a complaints process that you were satisfied with as a customer? What made that a better process?

Your comments will help to inform the inquiry and the questioning of witnesses at future sessions of the Committee.

    Many thanks

No one could accuse the Public Administration Select Committee of rushing into any public decisions / conclusions !

Is there anything planned re the Parliamentary Commissioner in the near future or is that it for this year ?

    Hi oneye14!

The Committee's inquiry is still ongoing - and when we have more information we will keep you informed. Watch this space!

The Committee's inquiry is still ongoing ...

    It is indeed

My casual posting above was in fact a prompt for DOT to inform us of recent events - but has yet to do so.
Go On - Do tell or was it covert ...
  • Yeah i guess the results are out soon.

Yeah i guess the results are out soon.

    No I think not ...

In the dirty world of politics there is a great deal of puppeteering - and DOT is on the end of a short string.

It's knowing who is pulling the strings and my money's on Bercow (That's the same Bercow who believes his colleagues were bored by increasingly 'irrelevant' Parliament)

Of course he wouldn't be there directly but getting his staff to do it for him..

I have contacted the ForumTeam and provided details which I would have expected DOT to publish.
oneye's "Whitehall moles & ferrets" have indicated that there was nothing covert on this subject / event,
and appear more reliable than DOT...

    Evidence Session - Tuesday 10 December 2013
Meeting is due to start at 9:30am

Members will hear from different ombudsmen about the operation of their service, including those in devolved nations whose responsibilities and powers differ from that of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO).

Members will also hear from private sector ombudsmen about the way in which they deal with complaints, and the Local Government Ombudsman, who works closely with PHSO in respect of investigations.

    Witnesses expected to attend include:
    • Jim Martin, Scottish Public Services Ombudsman
    • Peter Tyndall, former Public Services Ombudsman for Wales
    • Tom Frawley, Ombudsman for Northern Ireland
    • Dr Jane Martin, Local Government Ombudsman
    • Adam Sampson, Legal Ombudsman
    • Tony Boorman, Deputy Chief Ombudsman, Financial Ombudsman Service

Particular issues to be explored may include:
    • The importance placed on the varying roles of an ombudsman: dealing with individual cases; identifying systemic failure; and inspecting services;
    • How the establishment of different ombudsmen differs from that of PHSO, and what practices or powers it could be useful for PHSO to adopt; and
    • The viability of a single public services ombudsman for England.

    How to watch:
The session is taking place in Committee Room 16, Houses of Parliament

The Session can be viewed on Parliament TV (Silverlight or Windows Media Player required to stream TV): http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=14423

Members of the public can also attend evidence sessions. To find out further information on attending sessions please visit http://website.cms.parliament.uk/visiting/visiting-and-tours/ukvisitors/committees/?id=58930

To keep people informed of PASC's progress during the course of the inquiry, the team wanted to update MSE'ers about the work we have been doing.

At the end of last month PASC met informally with some of the individuals who had submitted evidence to the inquiry (written evidence to the inquiry can be accessed at http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/public-administration-select-committee/inquiries/parliament-2010/complaints-handling/parliaments-ombudsman-service/?type=Written#pnlPublicationFilter), to discuss some of the broad themes and concerns arising from their complaints. This will be used to support the Committee’s inquiry.

To everyone who has submitted their views and experiences so far - thank you very much. Anyone who has not - there is still time as the inquiry is still ongoing.

    Best wishes
