I am yet to get convinced that a chip&pin card can be cloned.
If it can't, it was most likely a relative or a colleague that kept stealing cash. In this case just changing the pin would have done the job instead of stopping and replacing the card.

A lot of ATMS will still accept a cloned magnetic stripe card (Even if the magnetic stripe says it should be a chip card) as the ATM and bank just assume the chip is dirty or broken (fallback). So all they need is magnetic stripe data and PIN.

I thought that there were not such ATMs left in UK.
If the transactions were not chip&pin this has to be the main point when complaining to the bank and then to FOS if needed. And it's important not to destroy the card as it is a proof that the chip wasn't damaged.

Could anyone have ordered a second card and a pin reminder?

You can not order a pin reminder I am pretty sure. They just send a new card and a new pin. The old card would be useless then because you can only have one debit card. Correct me if I am wrong. This has just been my experience. I always find when I have ordered a new card they cancel my old card. New 16 digit code, expiry, numbers on back. Of course acc and sort code stay the same.

AFAIK ALL ATMs use ONLY the magnetic stripe. Why else does the card need to go into the machine - to check that the details on the CHIP correspond to an obsolete magnetic stripe perhaps ? :rotfl:

If Santander did this to me they'd have an entire branch full of distracted customers hearing every word of what I thought about it ;)

There should be a recorded image at the cash machine. Have you asked the bank to produce this?
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

Err...No. How did you think you change your PIN at an ATM? The PIN is stored on the card, would be difficult if the ATM couldn't read the chip. Most read the chip (And can read the magnetic stripe)

Magnetic stripe ATMs don't even usually retain the card. You insert and swipe it back out again. Then select your options.

Do all ATMs take a picture of the person making the withdrawal? - or is this something you've seen on CSI?

Depends on the bank, I know might used to be the same but with a different start date, expiry date and CV2 thingy.

I've had a couple of accounts where they will give you a pin reminder.
