Actually it is currently possible to get a pitch with electricity for as little as £8 a night in Norfolk on a quiet but "few facilities" site (apart from the village pub 50 metres away!), and less than £11 on some weekends for a "full facilities including pool and cabaret in the evening!

As for what you can cook, it all depends on your ingenuity and whether you have a BBQ and one or more stove rings. Very acceptable "roast beef" can be done in the pot but I haven't yet worked out how to do the Yorkshire Pud yet - I guess pre-cooked frozen ones could be done in the BBQ with the lid on though:-)

    Have fun!

Hi peterbaker , do you mind telling me where that is , my father in law lives in mundford and we promised we would go his `way` when we go camping , sounds perfect !

Well DGJ, both sites are actually the other side of the county one near Beccles and the other near Belton so that's a good hour from Mundford.

The max facilities / cabaret one is Haven Holidays - they often have special offers online for the non-peak weekends, and when I posted that original message, there was a deal for 3 nights next weekend for just £31 including 10% discount for Haven regulars or Caravan Club members...it's gone now ... it's more than that for just one night now:( ...I was umming and erring about booking it myself...doh!

See here for the one near Beccles with the pub (friendly but quiet local pub ... good for a pint and a jaw, but no pub food): http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=5056689#post5056689

OK I understand the general concept, but surely you would have to be in quite a state for a teaspoon of sodium chloride and 8 teaspoons of sugar to be a good thing to swallow?? Is that more or less what's in the powders? I think I'll just remember to keep plenty of fresh water to hand when I am camping - prevention sounds better than cure!

Not really, you wouldn't have to be in quite a state, if the weather is hot you'd be surprised how quickly you start to dehydrate, especially if you're being active, and it is more of a part of your first aid thing.

Personally I always keep chilled Carlsberg in the motorhome fridge for that

PS Just booked 3 night weekend for July at Haven for £34.56 ... kids love it and last time I was there the Abba revival band in the free cabaret were absolutely brilliant! Or did I say that already?? Well anyway, I liked them:)

    Hi

I'd recommend visiting this website - its full of really useful information on anything you need regarding camping, caravanning etc. If you ask any questions on the message boards, its like the MSE website, very friendly and helpful people.

There's a very basic, but beautifully situated, campsite in the Duddon Valley in Cumbria: Turner Hall Farm http://www.duddonvalley.co.uk/phdi/p3.nsf/supppages/0955?opendocument&part=6

It's £3 per person per night, and just down the road from The Newfield Inn, which is a great pub with good food (and was Watership Down author Richard Adams' favourite haunt!)

I've also just discovered it's in The Independent's guide to the 50 best campsites!

I swear by ukcampsites.com I find that the feedback pages tell it as it is - so you know what to expect. We dont go for sites with clubhouses on as I prefer the kids to have a more Enid Blyton Famous Five sort of camping experience - and they seem to love it. Infact the less facilities the better for my kids (they love it of there are no showers!!!) We have had some wonderful experiences. They once played football in the dark, using torches, in their wellies with every kid and dad on the site on a National Trust site that was in the most beautiful location ever. Then next day they spent all day in the river at the side of the camp. It hardly costs anything when we go away for the weekend and we have a great time.

I am switching from caravanning (no tow car, but still have the van) to camping and we had 1 night in France a few weeks back and I learned a very important lesson, don't buy a tent, just because it 1) looks nice and 2) is cheap. I bought a pull up 4 man from Tesco which was classed as waterproof, after sitting in it and watching the rain come in, I decided it wasn't. Tesco did apologise and I got compensation, but they now class their tents as showerproof. I have bought a replacement, a 2 bedroom from Halfords £99 reduced from £199 and it came with 2 double airbeds, 2 lanterns and 4 luxury sleeping bags. We will probaly try a trip to The Dower House (Thetford Forest) first, then I want to go to Hollands Wood in the New Forest.
