Porting to 3, Video Calls Question

Hi all,

I've just signed up with 3 - got a K800i through The Link on a deal that now seems to be gone. I have my PAC code from Virgin and I was planning to port it over to 3.

But I'm running into a bit of confusion. One portion of 3's site describes the porting process as normal (i.e. ring us up with your PAC code and 5-7 days later your number will be ported). However, there's a document on their site that I downloaded (from here: http://three.co.uk/personal/customer_/important_documents.omp), which seems to state that if you Port your number in to 3 you will NOT be able to use that number universally. Video calls to your number from another network will need to use a separate 'video number' (I'm guessing it's the number 3 assigns originall).

In short, the document suggests that for video calls one would need two numbers. To me, this seems less than ideal, and perhaps a bigger hassle than merely changing my number now to the one 3 has given me.

My question: can anyone clarify this situation? Is it still the case that when porting to 3 one needs two numbers for video calls? Any advice much appreciated!

  • I wouldn't worry too much about video calls. I've been with three for two years (cash back deal then an unbeatable upgrade) and I've made two video calls in that time.

The quality of picture and sound means that I am unlikely to make many more (despite getting 50 mins of video calls in my tariff).

Don't lose any sleep over it (unless you really intend to make lots of video calls)

Thanks. What you say makes a lot a sense, and I don't really have plans to make a lot of video calls (indeed, my tariff doesn't include any for free). I suppose it only concerns me to the extent that as 3G networks become better (and become the standard), that perhaps video calls will go mainstream - and I'd rather not have the confusion if that's the case.
