I've had these in our flour a few times and my cupboards are clean and tidy Honest!). Mainly little tiny black ones, and once we had bigger browny beetle things with maggotty shaped larvae!! They were truly horrible. Now I keepflour in plastic containers and regularly check it. Will also do the freezing thing as well - didn't know about that.

I know - the time we had the brown ones made me heave. I think they come in with the flour. Good luck cleaning.

    Freezing really works, honest :)

(I shan't tell you that I found eggs, adults and even old dead ones in a pack of flour AFTER I'd made and eaten a batch of buns because that might make you feel sick! :( So I check very carefully now, and always freeze!)

  • Can anyone tell me what I can do to about these?

They are tiny creepy crawly things, and even managed to get into airtight containers and brand new unopened bags of flour. I regularly bleach the cupboard shelves, but they keep coming back. Are they harmful?

I am getting fed up of buying new bags of flour all the time!
  • They are psocids AKA book lice, they love anything starchy and thrive in warm humid conditions hence their love of our kitchens, flour and why they have population explosions in the summer.

Getting rid of them is hard because they lay their eggs in the smallest of cracks and in the folds of packaging. The best way of controlling them is to keep things like flour, sugar, pasta etc in sealed containers. With an ongoing problem it may be worth wrapping your flour in a freezer bag and freezing it. You can still use the flour straight from the freezer and freezing kills them and their eggs.

Its a common problem and there are lots of threads on this subject on the boards, so might be worth doing a search.
