By giving the card details to a business that used them.

He gave a set of instructions and 2 sets of card details to do split billing.

The OP is rather quiet about what exact instructions were given to the electrician. Was it "£2000 on card A and the balance on card B"? If the entire charge went through on card A, there should be plenty of dosh left in card B.

As the OP is upset about the bank letting the charge go through (not about the electrician not following instructions), the cynic in me can't help wondering if the OP did not rely on the cards (both of them) declining the transaction: "Let the electrician whistle for his money!"

To be fair I'm presuming he would have been sensible but I admit I could be proved wrong.

Another option would be to BT the amount he's over to the correct card.
  • I gave instructions that he took X amount on card A and Y amount on card B, He made 2 separate transactions just from the same card. The bank should never have let the second transfer go through.

It shouldn't have, but it has but deal with that later.

Get this issue sorted out now. Focus on the issue at hand which is you are over your credit limit by £3,500, due to a mistake by the person doing the transaction.

Ignore the bank until it's fixed.

Why not? Did you give them a copy of the instructions too?

Forget the bank. Get the sparky to refund £3.5k and charge it to the other card in line with your instructions.

You've already had the fee waived, this will reduce the balance on the card in line with the banks instructions.

I struggle to understand why a bank would allow someone go to £3500 over their credit limit. £350 maybe.

I agree - is this usual procedure?

This is for a later complaint to the bank, as no doubt this will cause bad markers on your credit file, where a decline wouldn't have been recorded at all.

But I'm impressed that this has managed to get this through you must have been rated highly on the banks systems.
