Thanks. If you click 'about us' on the Wartsila site, it will proudly tell you that they employ a total of 134 people in Russia (it's a Russian company. by the way). And the GenRent site makes it clear that they are in the business of providing temporary power generation facilities on a rental basis.

I think dual-fuel power generation is not yet readily available as a contributor to a national grid.

there is considerable potential for both wave power and tidal.

tidal power is politically very unpopular but if the lights start going out or prices rise too much vocal public opinion may change very rapidly

fusion is still the most likely long term solution

I have long wondered how long it will be before it will become viable for us to completely fill the North Sea with multipurpose rigs each of which would carry a wind turbine, a tidal generator, a wave generator and a bank of solar panels. Many of them might also be able to drill for gas and/or oil.

The Thames Estuary and the North Sea are already fairly cluttered with hardware, and most of it is out of sight of land (or very nearly so). Way to go?

A barrage on the Severn Estuary long over due, Some underwater turbines on the Moray Firth, macerated porpoise anyone.

The problem with a barrage is that it would drastically alter the behaviour of the tidal streams, and would destroy all sorts of habitats and eco-systems.

As well as the Moray Firth, there are quite a lot of trials taking place in the tidal races around Orkney. I have witnessed the 'Merry Men of Mey' in the Pentland Firth, and, trust me, it is fearsome!

I appreciate the fluffy issues of the Severn. Do we want "light" or not.

At some point the green nambys will realise they can't power their lifestyle 24/7/365 without concessions.

    Possible.

But nature will evolve, and other than a few greeny tree hugger types, nobody really cares.

There is a huge difference between evolution and damage repair.

    And very many people care.

If the green nambys eventually make 'concessions', to whom will they be conceding?

    Themselves.

When it comes to pinging Jemima's Ready Brek in the microwave on a cold and frosty morning I know what they will choose. Not to mention plug their car in ready for the school run.

Those coal mines will have been opened up again too.

If/when the lights go out, we will be like the people of Syria. Almost overnight, we will have to switch from a life of (relative) comfort to a life of despair. Hamish of Many Houses may be able to exploit his advantages for a little while, but he will eventually need to arm himself with guns.

I will say I do wonder with wind and tidal, to move the turbines they are taking energy out of the wind/water, in both cases the result the strength of current after said device is weakened.

Now its not enough to stop the currents, but what if they where everywhere, at some point it will have an impact.

Why don't people accept nuclear is the way forward.
