It's the religion that denies the Western style. But some I know still have as big a cocktail bar in their homes as I do.

Plus, I envy them for not having to pay tax.

    I don't understand!

Gas is not oil, and oil is not gas - as you say, they come down completely different supply chains, and they are used in completely different processes. A gas-burning power station, for example, cannot switch to oil.

How do you know this or will the price simply rise so much that only a very uber rich can afford it?

It'll rise so much that human ingenuity will find a cheaper more effective alternative and/ or alter lifestyles.

It will get more expensive and "freeze" people out.

You are right better things than stones diid occur.Since then our ingenuity has taken us forward in leaps and bounds. An alternative cost effective, powerful, portable, power source seems as elusive as ever.

Maybe Stirling Engines will be our saviour.

I find it hard to believe that human ingenuity has reached it's zenith so advances will be made but, yes, lifestyles will change too. It'll become more and more expensive to burn oil based fuels (no bad thing).

Changes will need to be made, some good some bad, but we'll cope.

Oil based fuels are dirt cheap so there's plenty more price pressure to come yet. Wake me up when most people decide to walk 2 miles to the shops because petrol is so expensive. Currently a 5 mile round trip will be 50p - nothing.

In your super dooper micro diesel perhaps.

Outside a city I know a mega Tesco was built a couple of years ago. It has a car park that is huge, many football pitches. It does make you wonder what sort of life span it will have. I have yet to see it over half full at peak.

As you lots of adjustments will be necessary - corner shops again perhaps.

there is considerable potential for both wave power and tidal.

tidal power is politically very unpopular but if the lights start going out or prices rise too much vocal public opinion may change very rapidly

fusion is still the most likely long term solution
