This does not make sense. If the card has been cancelled then how could they charge anything to it? Also, if you cancelled the insurance, they would not be able to authorise a charge. Is this a wind up?!

There is no such thing as a credit blacklist. Do you mean your credit card company has issued a default on your credit fie?

When did you find out that the insurance company had deducted the payment despite you cancelling the insurance with them?

When did the credit card company first write to you regarding the new debt/transaction incurred on your credit card? What did you do at that point?

When you got in touch/complained to the car insurance company did they confirm they have received your cancellation and should not have processed the payment? Have you got this in writing from them?

So what did you do in December 2010 when you saw the statement and realised that the payment had incorrectly been taken?

Did you contact the insurance company and ask for a refund to the card?

Did you contact the credit card company to say that this was an error by the insurance company and that you had asked them to investigate and refund the money?

Did you get the credit card company's agreement that they would wait whilst the insurance company investiagted? Or did you agree to make a payment towards the card bill whilst the ins company investigated?

What was the end result from the insurance company? Did they provide you with a refund? Did you pursue them for the interest and possibly late payments you incurred on the card due to their mistake?

What exactly have the card company put on your credit file in relation to this?

What has happened in the last 2.5 years to try to rectify this issue?

The more information you can give the better posters on here would be able to advise you, without having to guess what may have happened in the last few years.

I expect sorting it out at the time would have been a lot less effort than trying to get this resolved now.

Ignoring letters from the credit card company and not making much effort to deal with it was always likely to result in negative entries on your credit file.

Ideally at the time you would have got confirmation from the insurance company that the were in the wrong and got them to repay you not only the money they had taken out but any additional costs you had incurred. With that information I would then have contacted the credit card company to explain what happened, point out that the ins company had admitted it was their fault and asked them to remove the negative entries from your credit file as a goodwill gesture. If they didn't reply then the best action would have been to write again and possibly have your issue escalated to try to get it resovled then.

2 years later I imagine it will be harder to get any kind of goodwill gesture with regards to your credit file entry by the credit card company.
Whilst you may have been correct that the debt incurred was not your fault and you did not know about it originally, leaving it for so long and not replying to letters chasing the debt will not have helped your case.

Again - do you know what is on your credit file in relation to this debt?

Have you got a copy of your credit reports?

My guess is that asda have placed a default on your credit file.

That is likely to seriously impact on your chances of any new credit whilstever it is on there. Defaults stay on for 6 years since the default date.

If your wife is financially associated to you on your credit files (joint mortgage/joint bank accounts etc) then negatives on your credit file can also impact on her ability to get credit.

Whilst you can appeal a reject decision from a potential lender this just means an underwriter looks at the application and decision. Having a default is often enough to put most mainstream lenders off lending to you.
