As guesswho suggests, the OP may be used to US credit cards (or perhaps he/she googled some US cc sites).

Many US cards do provide car rental insurance as a feature, and it sounds like this kind of damage would be covered.

(Here's an example discussion about it on a US site: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/really-car-rental-insurance-070104947.html )

Here is a memorable one: Barclaycard rug

(Looks like it was 100 days free insurance)

Late 1990's I think (and the free perks were withdrawn about 2003 ).

For some mysterious reason many people don't understand the obvious difference between protection against rogue/failing suppliers and insurance against unexpected eventualities.

To be fair to people when it comes to rental companies. They often do have a statement saying something along the lines of "While your credit card may cover you for damage, you will have to process a claim through your card issuer. We will charge all damage to the card presented. Many credit cards also don't provide the same cover as CDW" when trying to sell CDW or LDW (Depends on which company).

So I can understand the common misconception that people have about credit card rental protection. Not that its any excuse.

Scary. I remember it like it was last week (although preferred the one with them on the boat!).

The hirer's standard cover should cover you for everything except the excess. What was the excess?
In future, you can take out your own annual excess cover for about £40pa in Europe. You pay the excess, the insurer refunds you. Much cheaper than paying the hirer's inflated charges.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
