Natwest - Unfair Default on my account without my knowledge

Hi There,

I had a current account with NatWest 2 years back and without an overdraft ,they upgraded to silver account and all of their monthly charges and it camearound £600, which I didn't notice, because I was switched to another accountand I asked bank to close my account , but instead doing anything they simply addall the charges and made my outstanding £600 and defaulted in my credit file. Also I haven't received any pre-warning letters or notification letters ofoutstanding balance. I have gone through money saving expert's template letterto remove the default , but it seems not working. Can anyone kindly help me withthis . Thanks a lot in advance.

    this makes no sense at all;
bank cannot upgrade to a chargeable account without your agreement, what did you agree to?
what are these charges that came to £600 - that's about 4 years of most account charges.
    'Not noticing' is your fault.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • Hi David,

I didn't ask for any upgrades and any more facilities from the account.

Well, stick to your guns then. Demand refund of all charges and your credit history cleared.
Start with a formal complaint, then take it to FOS if needed.

They cannot upgrade your account to a premium one without your consent.

How many statements did you ignore before reaching this level of indebtedness

What if they were paperless statements? Personally I wouldn't bother checking regularly accounts with zero balance that I don't use.

Well that's a mistake. How would you spot a fraudulent transaction?

Even if the OP was on paperless statements an email would have been sent to advise a statement was ready to view.

Considering the OP thought the account was closed I would have raised my eyebrow if I had received such an email.

I would also imagine due to the length of time they would have also started to receive telephone calls from the collections department.

I don't receive anything for my Smile and Cahoot accounts, but it can be different for Natwest.
  • You're probably lying, however if you did not use the account after charges started accruing then just make a complaint and charges will be refunded along with credit file being amended to remove default.
    I work for Natwest.
