Has anybody had a positive experience claiming from a Travel Insurance Company?

  • Admiral paid no problems recently for £300 for a medical problem when in Asia. They didnt appear on the comparison site, I was quite sceptical using those companies who charge £3/4 for a policy

This is another vote for L & V. Have many pre- existing medical conditions and their quote was very competive. Two months before the holiday I tore a cartilage in my knee which meant we had to cancel the holiday. They paid out very quickly. They even telephoned within a week to say they had all the forms and that my claim had been accepted. We did both lose a £50 excess fee but this was clearly explained to me when I accepted their quote so no complaints.

Efficent, friendly and helpfulf - couldn't have asked for more.
  • Last year i was in Munich and walked behind a taxicab - estate car - just as the door was shutting. Result was a large gash in my head that needed 15 stitches.

I had to pay out for that as I'd stupidly not taken my E111with me, but the free insurance I got with Nationwide FlexAccount paid out for that, minus the excess without question.

The forms were a bit torturous, and it took them about 6 weeks to pay, but I got it all in the end pretty easily.

    Hi Dirk Gently,

Sorry to hear what happened when you were on holiday but I'm glad you were able to recoup your losses and you're ok.

Umm what's that you said about the Nationwide FlexAccount? I happen to have a joint-account with my partner.... this is going to look really easy and almost too good to be true if they provide medical coverage across for its customers!

It's European multi-tip insurance that you get for free if you meet the requirements. Full details here : http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/flexaccount/travel.htm

Beware, though - they say :
Once you qualify for free travel insurance we will send you a FlexAccount Travel Cover Eligibility Declaration to read, complete and return to us. Your cover will not start until you receive your Certificate of Insurance - we’ll send this to you within two weeks of receiving your completed FlexAccount Travel Cover Eligibility Declaration.
so you may not be able to use it for an existing claim.

So... I guess the the stickler comes down to medical. I'm OK in the UK...but don't have medical insurance abroad (I'm not a citizen so I don't have that reciprocal EU card thing)

I don't know your circumstances - but eligibility for the card is based on residence, not citizenship.

If you are 'ordinarily resident' in the UK you are entitled to one.

There are a few exceptions but that's the general rule

Though it sounds as though you may not be resident anywhere

I had to claim on my M&S travel insurance a few years ago.

My mum was taken seriously ill a couple of weeks before we were due to travel. After a couple of days it was clear that she wasn't going to get any better, and after consulting with her doctors took the decision to cancel the holiday. She died the day before we would have left for the holiday.

I made the claim with M&S - the doctor also had to fill out a form to confirm the details. M&S paid out, with no fuss or bother within 2 weeks.

I will stick with M&S, they gave me a great service at a time I didn't need any hassle

I've got a free policy with my bank account (Ex Alliance and Leicester Premier Current account) and have claimed twice, which is through Ageas Insurance.

This year, due to enormous reaction to mosquitos in Egypt, the hotels doctor just took my travel insurance details whilst having treatment, and I've never heard anything.
    (I'm assuming they've coughed up).

The other was last year, a particularly unusual claim as I'd participated in a bodypainted naked photo installation in Munich - every inch was painted red.
Unfortunately, the sheer volume of red water in the bathroom and ferocity of the tint meant we erm...stained the bath, shower tray, grout and carpet of the hotel.
    (Nine rooms in total).

My insurance paid a smidge less than what the hotel was claiming for, with no quibble at all(which in my eyes was extortionate, as other hotels managed to get the paint out - Novotel claimed we had to fund a replacement carpet)

I checked the requirements...don't qualify by many reasons. Don't have the right debit card, don't have any money going into that account, nor want to switch all my accounts there (yet). Back to the drawing board! But thank you for the link, I now have lived here long enough to open my own account so I will keep this on the back burner.

I'll have to look into it, I'm not a citizen, and don't have permanent residency (yet) but that will change next year. Here on a civil partner probationary visa.
