Help me with my utilities!

Hi, I need help trying to sort out my utilities. I have dual fuel with edf engery and the deal comes to an end this month. I pay £85 electricity and £78 gas a month on direct debit for our house. Please can you tell me what is the best deal to go for at end of month. I am confused over staying with edf on either of their deals of fixed promise till Sept 14 or fixed frreeeeze till Nov 16. thank you for replying and helping me sort out what is very confusing for me when I start looking at the the prices for standing charge/KWh charge etc etc.

Well, we are on the same tariff only that we paid less a lot less a month now over the summer for our house but anyway. We went for the fixed till September 2014 rather than the 3 year fixed deal. I calculated that I save over £100 (based on or usage and the unit prices published on their website) in the first year. Ok I need to change again in 2014 but I thought going fixed for so long at so much higher prices would leave us out of pocket. (it even states on their website the avagrage user will spend £1350 (2016) a year vs £1230 (2014). It's not that complicated. Just take your annual usage in kWh (they sent us a bill recently summarising the last year) and multiply it by the 2014 fix unit price and the 2016 unit price. Do that for gas and electricity. Then add 365 days of standing charge for both. That should give you an idea how much more you pay with the 2016 fix and you need to weigh up the added security of not getting a price rise in three years vs. paying a lot less fixed for one year.

    Hope that made sense

Use any comp site with your annual kWh usage-it's pointless just looking at unit rates, as there are too many other variables.
However, something is wrong if you have gas CH and DHW but are paying more for your electricity than gas. Your gas DD should be around two thirds of the total monthly cost.
Post your actual annual kWh figures for each fuel for proper advice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Why? It depends what's run on electricity and what on gas. And at what time of the year. Our last bill showed 245kWh of electricity (£34) used vs 251kWh of gas (£15) for a three bedroom two storey house. We only have the hot water on a timer at the moment (all summer too) that comes off the gas. So maybe his DD is adjusted over the summer to reflect that (which EDF usually do). Fair enough, in winter we pay more due to heating and overall over the year we use 2753 (elect.) vs 14228 kWh (gas).

But I agree actual numbers would help.

  • Just checked my last bills ( Gas - May 13 / 27 Mar 13 - 20 May 13/) Gas states we used for the previous year 21,757 KWH. We have one less adult now this year as my son has moved out so cant understand why we using more.
This period last year -19.91 kWh per day
At your last statement -95.4 kWh per day
This statement - 50.96 kWh per day

    Electricity: used 9298 kwh previous year (Mar 13/18 Dec 12 - 09 Mar 13 )

This period last year -24.86 kWh per day
At your last statement -20.43 kWh per day
This statement - 38.1 kWh per day

Thanks to you all for replying

Hi, your gas is above average ( 16500kwh) but not excessively however your electricity usage is around triple the average ( 3300kwh) , whatever tariff you chose you really need to take measures to get your use of electricity under control !!
  • yes we thought we were using too much as there are only two of us in our house. three bedroom semi. We are trying to understand why we pay that much!! as don't have anything excessive that is out of the ordinary that we can figure is any different

Buy an energy monitor ( around £30 ) and check how much each appliance uses.

Switch everything off and see what the "background" usage is.

The heaviest users are tumble dryer, washing machine , dishwasher and immersion heater.

Check that you don't have an immersion heater that you don't know about.

I assume you don't run a hot tub , they eat electricity !

One of the best deals at the moment is the M&S Fix and Save tariff, £46 cashback through cashback sites plus £20 of M&S vouchers.

To be honest I switched to a new provider, and never received the cashback and myn did say it included. I trust topcash over it now
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
