A roast Sunday lunch...how many still cook one?

Yesterday, I cooked Beef for 11 people, which was a bit of a squash around a table designed for 6, and required 2 garden chairs, 2 desk chairs and a step stool.
2 of the 11 were vegetarian. (Large Mushroom, with Garlic and Brie)
Beef, Roast and mashed Pototoes, parsnips, leaks, runner beans, yorkshire puds, gravy,followed by Jelly, Jelly Whip, Black Forrest Gataux, stilton, crackers. Washed down with wine, beer and ginger ale.
Up until an hour before I thought I was catering for 12.0 -

Add some eggs to a measuring jug, add an equal volume of plain flour and milk. (i.e. if 2 eggs have a volume of 100ml then, top up to 200ml with flour and then to 300ml with milk.) then season and blend.
Get you tin/s screaming hot with a splash of your preferred fat/oil in each (Fray Bentos pie tins make excellent tins for Yorkies).

We have a roast most Sundays, if we're away & don't have one we all really miss it
Sunday doesn't feel like Sunday without a roast for tea in this house

During the winter on a Sunday we either have a roast with all the trimmings, a casserole or one of my favourite pasta dishes. I really am exceptional! :eek: I do as many as 3 a week sometimes - honest! I love them, it's what I call proper food. I love to cook if in the mood, although pizza & burgers have their place & I eat those too sometimes. I find it quite easy to chuck a joint or chicken in the oven .... Of course there is the washing up but I don't do it
So what do people cook & eat then if not a roast dinner or just a dinner with meat, pot, & veg?0 -

You need a normal amount of food (and nutrition!).
We only have Yorkshire pudding if we are having roast beef with potatoes etc.
Other traditional roasts all get potatoes and parsnips, Maybe a roast carrot or two.
In summer if we roast we probably ditch the roast carby veg but have roast med veg with lamb or chicken.
At this time of year IMO pork wins, with the apples falling and apple sauce everywhere, Its also the kind of time we have roosters seeking a pot usually .....:o
These sort of meals can even be had mid week after work if you aren't arriving home late and don't pick a huge joint!
A roast where you don't go over the top isn't an unhealthy meal choice, its just (IMO) a bit boring to have week in and week out!
Ah but a proper roast dinner to me is the meat, plus 2 or 3 veggies, roast and mash tatties, and gravy. i,m quite partial to cauli cheese too ~ which is probably why we occasionally go to a carvery instead!0 -

Roast AND mash? :eek: We'd never move again I think! Sometimes making a choice is a beneficial thing.
I'm a huge fan of gravy, I love gravy, Tbh, gravy and veg would do me,:o0 -
At the moment I'm doing a Sunday dinner every week, though it's not always a roast ( last week was mince and dumplings ).
Yesterday I did roast chicken and it really doesn't take as long as you might think, I can do it in 1.5 hours. Bung the chicken in which takes 1hr 20mins. While thats cooking par boil the potatoes for the roasties and put them in for the last hour. Once they're in the oven prep all the veg and make the yorkshire pudding mix. Yorkshires go in for last 30 minutes, veggies for 20 minutes and then while the chickens resting make the gravy from the juices.
That being said I think the first time I tried to make a roast dinner it took about 3 hours :rotfl:It's all about getting the timing right!!New House... New Mortgage! February 2017: £144,000 :eek:
