A roast Sunday lunch...how many still cook one?

I cooked one this week...but I really dont do them as often as I could/should!

We probably only eat one as a family that I've cooked at home maybe 3 times a year,I guess we have a few out over the winter months in a country pub or similar...but as a child growing up,we seemed to have one most weeks.

Its not that we dont eat together as a family,we do usually manage at least 5 out of 7 evening meals together and usually breakfast on a saturday morning...so I dont feel as if its a case that we dont "group" enough...just that I wonder whats happened to Sunday lunch?

Yesterday was an exception but it did seem to take forever to cook and then left a mountain of washing up...lovely as it was I'm just not sure how my mum used to knock one out week after week when we were growing up.

So...what did you have for lunch yesterday...?

We had a roast with all the trimmings followed by a homemade dessert...very nice ...

but its more usual for us to have a sandwich...or even a cooked breakfast followed by nothing until maybe soup and a pizza for tea

Where has the traditional Sunday lunch dissapeared to...

  • I do love a sunday roast but like you said, it's an awful lot of work to cook and then there's the washing up.

If I do a roast now (it's only ever for 2 people as opposed to a big family meal) I try and wash up as I go, this takes of the stress after the meal!

Yesterday we had fast food, terrible. I would have much preferred a roast dinner and have sworn I will do one this Sunday!

We sometimes have a roast if the kids are around, they both live in their own homes now, sometimes we get invited to their's for Sunday lunch..yesterday we had a Salmon Wellington which is very nice and easy to cook from the freezer with veg and potatoes in the early evening.

We eat together all weekend meals (no kids) but not a huge fan of roasts, we just have them a few times a year too. However, I do think roasts are one of the easier meals to throw together. We also tend to have our weekend meals in the evening unless we have guests, because we are busy grafting on the house or garden through the day!

I rarely do a large Sunday lunch as it wipes out the afternoon so as we're usually working it makes more sense to have our roast in the evening. I won't often do a roast in summer, yesterday's was the first we've had in quite a few weeks.

I do the works with it. Roasties, parsnips, yorkshires, stuffing... yum.

Although I've called it Sunday lunch...in fairness it probably took me most of the day to cook and we didn't sit down to eat it until 3ish!!!!

I think it just amazes me that my memory of growing up is of mum cooking every sunday...a full roast and it being on the table at mid day on the dot!

Almost every weekend in the winter, but I do love to cook.

My trick is when you are feeling like you can't be bothered, get a large cooking pot (le creuset style) - bung in a chicken and some root veg, in the oven, forget about it, steam some greens, frozen puds, bisto - no effort at all.

OH cooks a roast every week- usually chicken unless I'm not there as I don't eat most red meat. I was at the rugby yesterday so he warmed it up in the microwave for me when I came home and it was nice. Chicken, roasties, stuffing and mixed veg.

My parents in law do it every week they are free, which normally is once every two weeks. My parents tend to do one each time we go up, which is every month or so. I used to do one for them if they came to us, but now I do something a bit more exciting like tapas.

I maybe do once once every couple of months for just me and OH as a treat when we have a totally free lazy Sunday (which isn't often as normally Sunday is visit family day!). I find it really enjoyable to cook, esp with a glass of wine in hand :)

I go to my parents every Sunday and it's their excuse to have a roast at lunch time. It does not take any longer to prepare than most meals if you are cooking from scratch although my mum now uses frozen yorkshires to save a bit of time.
