............but the screw positions mentioned earlier by one of the posters dont tie with the ones needed with new fitting we have bought.
LoL. I wasn't trying to suggest that it did for one minute.
The fitting weighs about 4 kg.
Defo got to go direct into a joist then and I'd wnt a bit more than the inch that you mentioned at the top of the thread too.. The springty toggle thingys suggested by someone else will be totally useless to you.

    Cheers

No, but his point was (I assume), that it shows you where the joist likely lies.ie, the new ones should/will lie on that same centre line.
You'd be spot on. Was it not that obvious then that an assumption is required? Sorry I was unclear then.

Unless the ceiling has been replaced since it will inevitably be L&P. Don't even consider trying to use the laths as a support structure for a 4kg object hung from just two screws. They MUST go into a joist as previously advised.

Was L&P widely used as late as 1953?

Some of these links suggests that the UK moved to a type of plasterboard in the 1930s and especially post 1945.

What's the relevance of lath and plaster vs plasterboard? It needs to go into a joist regardless.

A single pendant light fitting was often fitted direct to L&P ceilings, and to be honest probably did offer enough support, ie, if it was L&P which at circa 1953, I doubt, it may not be fixed to a joist at present.
That could just be the situ here.

Regardless it's a pretty simple check, and as the op isn't doing the job themselves I don't see the issue, any semi capable trade will check.
