I hate to ask a question 3 times, but here goes...
How much space is there on you d drive, and when was it last defragmenter?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Apparently they are all USB2.0. I have tried multiple ports, still no difference.

Have you tried one of the ports on the back of your PC (i.e. one connected directly to the motherboard)? The ones on the front are usually connected via a USB hub which can sometimes cause problems.

Just a thought... but can you try booting the PC from a live Linux distro and copying the data to an internal drive? Slax is quick and dead easy to use: http://www.slax.org/

You might have to check which filesystems are supported by the Linux distro if you need to write to an NTFS partition -- I think most modern distros support NTFS writing... but I'm not 100% sure...
