File transfer to USB media slow - Win7

Hello,

An Acer Aspire Revo R3610 running Win7 64bit with 4GB Ram. Connected to a Vertamin 320gb External HD.

When I transfer a file to the external hd from the Win7 machine, its about 1 MB/s in speed.

When I transfer a file with an Acer Happy Netbook, I get a good 35-40 MB/s in speed.

I have removed & installed the USB stuff in device manager, its made no change.

Any tips?

    Is it one particulat hard drive, or any that you use - I ask because I have a Kingston USB drive that is really slow compared to my other drives and a usb HDD that I use?
  • On the laptop its super fast..on the R3610 (Win7 64bit Home) its dog slow.

    I could probably transfer the files via the LAN --> Router --> Wifi --> Laptop --> External HD.

    I've also closed the anti-virus incase that was slowing it, but its still the same. Both computers run the same antivirus.

    Laptop = Win7 Starter (32bit)
    R3610 = Win7 Home (64bit)

    I wonder if the USB port is struggling to deliver the amount of power needed to spin the drive at optimum speed?

  • Hi Oblivion,

    I can check that. The PC has an external 1TB HD which is powered by a transformer.

    What speed is the USB port you are using? Have you tried a different one?

    Are you transferring files off the built in hard disk, or from some other source?
    Are you doing it one file at a time?
    How much free space is on the source drive?
    How much free space is on the USB drive?
    As macman has said, have you tried a different port?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • Hello all,

    Apparently they are all USB2.0. I have tried multiple ports, still no difference. It starts about 5mb/s then slowly ramps down and sits at 450-600kb/s.

    If I plug it into my laptop, its back to full speed.

    Free space...loads... on the 320gb HD its about 260GB free.

    How much free space is on the R3610?

    Has it been defragged recently?

    Are you trying to copy files that may be getting used by other programs at the same time?

    If it's large file transfers (each file larger than 100Mb for example) then in my experience transfer speeds can slow way down. Windows tends to like to transfer tiny files rather than big ones for some reason!

    it might be as simple as the motherboard can't pass the data between sata drive and usb drive quick enough.

    Usually a real-time antivirus is the problem other times it could be the speed of the drives at both ends if it has to do error correction. If possible can you try different USB cables?

  • Hi guys, its files from another partition of the hard drive. The R3610 has 1 drive, which is partitioned into C: & D:. C: holds all windows stuff, and the D: is just for stuff.

    I was trying to transfer it from the D: onto the External 320 gb HD. Its been slow all week, I think im just going to accept it.

    I have attemped to reinstall the Sata Controller drivers, and other methods found from google.

    Its just broke and ill have to leave it at 500kb. It starts fast, then dies of death..
