Yes, because you would never be rude, would you? Was there any need for your first two posts on this thread? If you can't take it mate, don't dish it out.

I only made a point about DH, They also say DD(Darling daughter)

We obviously understand DD to mean something entirely different.

Do we want the Mumsy thread to filter over here?

    "We" ?
Does sub 400 posts (few of them useful) qualify you as "one of us" ?

The jury is still out on that one.

Only you had a problem understanding it "we" all understood the context.

  • Thanks for all of the responses...well those with a point to them at least!

I think we will just probably end up sticking with the 2 cars although will probably discuss the scooter option a bit more. As I said, it was more to see how other people manage/d. And the suggestions have bee helpful.

Even getting a taxi home on Mr Anon (or DH!!)'s :rotfl: unsociable hours weeks would be the equivalent of the current petrol costs unless they do a discount for regular custom!! And public transport isn't available then.

sounds like you need two cars.

I disagree with buying a new one though. I say go full on bangernomics for car 2, since if it does die you can be on hand to give a lift. One of the primary things that makes bangernomics successful is having a second reliable car to pick up the mess!
do minimum servicing, find a decent local garage to conduct the MOT, and see how long you get out of it. Keep £1000 aside for your next banger when the old car dies.
  • Well I will be blown down with a feather. My little rustbucket passed her MOT!!! She needs new wiper blades and that's it.

Whilst the scooter isn't a bad shout it becomes a different thing when the weather changes.

Not only are there loads of cars about with reduced visibility due to setting of half steamed up but the road becomes much harder to deal with.

Hidden / slushed over pot holes, ice on grates and diesel spills are not much fun.

O and it can be briggerdy cold and miserable too. :D

I suppose it depends on where you live and what the commute is like but i don't see a scooter as a year round choice for the majority of riders.
  • Keep the "banger" until it dies, ie costs too much to continue with.

Then buy another "banger" for £500-£1,000 you can actually get something half decent for £1k.

This is quite useful, tells you how much a car will cost to run factoring in everything, so you can see that for the mileage you do a new or nearly new car with good MPG simply doesn't add up:

Even for me doing 25k miles a year a new car isn't going to save money over a ~10 year old that has good fuel economy.

For many years, me and my partner (who also has Fibro, so I know where you're coming from on the pushbike thing) ran 3 old banger cars to deal with this situation. Usually two of them were working at any given time, giving me free time to get the third one sorted and keep us motoring.

For the "move closer to work" suggestion. In my experience as soon as you do that, that is when you get made redundant!

Not sure a scooter is a good solution either. It's going to be rather fatiguing compared to a car, and as soon as the weather gets bad you're really going to regret it.

If you need a car the size of the Galaxy then you're largely stuck where you are. There may be cost savings from replacing that with a smaller car of a similar vintage, assuming you are careful.
  • Thanks again all! I am in total shock that my little Ka wasn't condemned!! She currently has bolts keeping her bumper in place because it decided to fall off one day. But she gets us to work and back safely and legally so she'll do for now.

I hadn't really thought about the weather affecting scooter riding so looks like we'll probably keep 2 cars. It's not that we can't afford it, just that it is a huge chunk of our income. At least we looked into possible alternatives even if they have just made us realise our current situation is the best for now.

I love the galaxy although that's not as needed as it once was. When we got it, we had 2 car seats and a big teenager and that seemed like the best option. Now the teenager is pretty much doing his own thing so we don't often need his seat.

I shall look at the link, scaredofdebt. Thanks for that.
