I wish to put a vehicle on SORN back on the road on 1st Oct. How can I do this as the ved website defaults to 1st Sept?
Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

Wait until the 1st October. At some time in the early morning. As soon as you have paid it and have a receipt number you can drive the car without the tax disc. You have 14 days in which to display the disc.

There are only two main exceptions to not displaying a valid VED:

    a) You are driving to or from a booked MOT test or place or repair for the purposes of obtaining an MOT certificate
    b) You renewed your road tax online PRIOR to the expiration of your previous VED license.

Neither apply in this case so you leave yourself open to a charge of not displaying a valid VED

We went over this the other day the law has changed...only just a few months ago to also cover the period in which a tax disc is obtained before SORN expires.

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2013/29/section/188/enacted

    Renewal etc.
The period of 14 days following the time when a licence or nil licence for or in respect of the vehicle, or a relevant declaration applying to the vehicle, ceases to be in force, but only if an application for a licence or nil licence for or in respect of the vehicle to run from that time has been received before that time.

It only changed in July, I'm running 6 months behind so haven't got to that yet.

  • It changed in 2008, in July the period was extended from 5 working days to 14 days.

Oh my God! I'm even farther behind than I thought. I need to get a speed reading course.

You don't need to wait until the first. You can buy the disc either online or over the post office counter a couple of working days before the end of the month, and get 12 months plus a couple of days, rather than 11 months plus what's left of the current month.

A new licence can be taken out from the 5th of the month that the old one expires, but it will not be valid until the first of the month it was taken out for, so the old one must be used until then.

As the OP's vehicle is SORN, taking out a licence now will start from 1st September, which is why the advice is to wait until 1st October.

Not if the vehicle isn't already taxed you can't, if the vehicle has no tax and you try taxing it on 26th of the month it will be backdated to the start of the month. Different if its already taxed.
