Query re sound system/tv

Hi

I have an old Panasonic TV that weighs a ton and I'm moving soon so would like to get a new one before then. It is about ten years old I think - problem is I really like the sound system and always play my music from it, and it's great surround sound when watching films.

I wonder whether I can still use the DVD player with a newer TV. It is Panasonic SAHT530 DVD Home Theater Sound System.

Can anyone advise please? My budget for the TV is up to 500. I don't think the DVD needs upgrading as it was so state of the art at the time. It's fine as far as I'm concerned anyway but the TV is clunky and slow - old style flatscreen with a ton of stuff at the back - takes two men to lift it. Thanks.

  • As long as you can plug the DVD player into the TV, you'll be able to use it
  • OK thanks, well I'll check this tomorrow. There is a scart lead and another lead.

So all you need is a SCART socket on your new TV.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks. I posted same question on here a few months ago, but can't find the thread, but the person who responded then said I would be limited to the TVs I could connect it to, to get the surround sound etc. So I'm confused.

I went into PC World just now and they said a Scart would do it.

Don't know why but I'm skeptical - maybe because mine was set up as a whole system and was a really good one for its time.

I have no idea about modern TVs but I really want to get rid of the TV as it is an eyesore. Just need to keep the sound. I'll have a shop around.

So not all TVs have a SCART socket?
  • So I can get any TV basically? No idea which one to get.
  • Actually just had a tidy up and there are so many wires etc it does my head in! Am thinking of changing TV and sound system altogether, but don't have much money to spend..I've just got to a stage where I want to travel lighter; I'm moving to a modern flat and really don't want loads of old stuff, wires and dust etc. If that makes sense.:D

Do you have a twin phono lead from the audio out on your TV to the TV audio in on your SCHT530?

If you want to connect the new TV the same way, you need a TV with twin phono audio out, and they're getting rarer and rarer. If you get one with an optical audio out, you can get converter for around £12 that will allow the TV to connect to the audio in on your 530.

I don't think the folks who've said you can 'just use a Scart' have got the picture ( pun intended)

And yes, you will need a TV with at least one SCART, or component video in, or composite video in - a TV with HDMI inputs only is not for you.

I'm assuming you want play TV sound through the 530 system, of course...

Thanks googler, sorry I couldn't find original thread! Yes I want to play music and films through the 530.

I will pop in to Richer Sounds later this week when I get the chance and take all this info with me, thanks again. Will let you know how it all goes.:)

you only need that audio cable to get the sound from the TV through the sound system.

So if you use the TV's built in tuner, you will not get the sound from the TV channels through the sound system without it.

but anything plugged directly into the sound system will work fine.

most modern systems now are designed to use HDMI and can carry both audio and video
