Computer -->> HDMI -->> Tv -->> OPTICAL OUT -->> Surround Sound.

Have you not got a Optical Out from the Tv, which you can put into the surround sound amp?

if the home cinema app has HDMI connections (almost all new ones do now) Then you will plug everything into it, just having the 1 HDMI cable from the amp to the tv

some TV's do not send audio back from the TV. Mine has optical connections on the back, but its only used to send audio from the built in tuner, anything plugged in via the HDMI ports will just use the built in speakers.

most modern home cinema systems are designed to have everything plugged into them and just use the TV as the screen.

if you home cinema doesn't do this, then you will require a TV that is capable of sending out its audio to an external source

This Sony is no good for what the OP wants, and many of these all in one systems will be no good either.
Think about the connections needed BEFORE buying something!
The general rule is that you have set top boxes, into an amp, into the TV. The amp does the switching, outputs the sound, and passes the picture through to the TV.
OP has Virgin and a DVD player. Therefore I would suggest we have the Virgin box connected to the amp via HDMI, and the DVD (guessing SCART only) connected to the TV via SCART, and optical to the amp if available. Amp then connects to TV via HDMI.
If you want sound from the TV itself, you need it and the amp to support ARC (Audio Return Channel) where it goes back down the HDMI cable, or, since we already know it doesn't have optical, use red & white phono OUTPUTS from the TV into the amp.
I don't know anything about these all in one jobs, but I don't think you'll cover the connections required above with one:
    At least 1 HDMI in
    1 Optical in
    1 stereo phono in
    1 HDMI out

just beaware that for ARC, both the TV and the amp need to support it for it to work.

    Hello,
I have an 18month old Finlux smart TV Finlux 46S8030. We also have Sky. I have just tried to install a Panasonic home threatre system/Blue ray player (SC STT460) and can get it working fine until I try to get the sound through the speakers direct from the TV. We bought a HDMI cable yesterday and it worked for a micro second then stopped. (The TV has 4 HDMI ports, none say ARC or Out, but we've tried them all incase). So today we bought an optical digital audio cable and put in the optical out port of the telly and the digital audio in port on the Blue ray player. Again it worked for a second, then later for another second but no longer.
Playing with the ipod button on the blue ray controller seems to get it working when 'D-in' shows on the blue ray
This makes no sense to us. We are all out of ideas, can someone help???

You probably need to switch the TV to send the audio down the optical cable.

Edit: Yes, page 31 of the manual: http://www.finluxdirect.com/content/ebiz/shop/resources/pdf/46S8030-IB.pdf

Make sure the digital out is in a format that your sound system can work with.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Thanks, I went though the Finlux manual to see if there was a way to tell the telly which output to use, but found no way of doing it. Even the manual has no suggestions - and trying to call them was pointless too - they wouldn't answer any questions unless I paid. Not even a simple - where do i plug the lead in!
