connecting my tv to my surround sound

hi, I have just bought a new sony home cinema surround sound system with dvd, DAV TZ140, and am having trouble setting it up to listen to the tv through the surround sound.

I have a virgin media cable box HD,
the connections available are as follows:

back of the cable box, 1 hdmi, and 2 scart sockets

on the back of the new dvd player there is 1 hdmi, 1 red 1 white (labelled tv/cable) and 1 yellow (labelled video out),

on the back my tv (which is a sony bravia KDL37p3020) there are 2 scart sockets, 2 hdmi sockets, and a green a blue a red a red and another red in a line, then a bit higher up by the PC inputs there are another 2 red and 2 white

i already had 1 HDMI cable that goes from the tv to the cable box, but i have bought another 1 to go from the 2nd tv slot to the dvd player.

i have played a dvd and the sound has come through the surround sound speakers, but its the TV's sound i cannot get to work through the speakers

i have tried to connect an audio (red & white connectors at both ends) to the back of the dvd and then to the back of the tv, but to no avail.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
its only a bargain, if you need it or will use it.

What does the instruction manual suggest as a solution?

    You must have one, surely?

Edit - p18 of the TV manual -one pair of red/white is the audio output. The one with the arrow leading out of the circle. Connect that to the TV/cable Audio in on the HT system, and select TV/cable on the remote

The manuals are not very good these days, they seem to assume everyone knows the symbols.

But a 5.1 surround with only red/white phono input. Great for DVD but hmmm for tv.

The manuals have narrative as well as the symbols. You can look them up online, same as I did....

Not sure what your last point is, as the two Sonys seem made for each other - one has an audio output, the other an audio input and a selection switch to select that input.
  • thanks googler, that works for the dvd but not watching tv through my cable box or playing my xbox,
I think I have made a mistake buying this :(, so I am taking it back to currys and getting a separate amplifier and speakers, lets hope currys give me a refund

If they do and you go down the separates route, try a proper shop :D.

If you have one near you I would recommend Richer Sounds.

As well as good prices the staff will be knowledgeable and be able to sort out kit that will work with your set up.

I have a Sony 7.2 surround amp with Virgin box, PS3, Wii U, Phillips HD DVR all going into it via HDMI and 1 HDMI cable from that to TV. So in effect the TV is just a monitor.

Edit: Just noticed you are in the West Midlands, so there should be one nearish you, there is one in Birmingham City Centre, Solihull and Lichfield that I know of.

    Quite simple, stereo into 5.1

Can get decent surround system from currys, just not the knowledge you would get from richer sounds. As said, just get a stand alone surround sound, as dvd player are cheap as anything, or better still blu ray.

Richer sounds do have a budget pioneer setup for £150, 4 HDMI, so can use loop through so plenty of connections for your devices

... but you said the problem was getting the TV's sound through the sound system? If you're getting any sound to the TV from the cable box or xBox, it should be reaching the audio outs too .... but

Are there any menu options controlling the audio out on the TV?

Still not sure what point you're trying to make. Yes, the output from the TV is a stereo pair, but the input on the DVD system is also a stereo pair, and regardless of whether or not the DVD system tries to encode it, or feeds it only to the two front speakers, the two components do appear to be designed to work together.

Not saying they won't work, as they will, but pseudo 5.1 from stereo is just pointless.
