NatWest account but won't let me have anything!!!!

I have had a basic Natwest account for 6 years, and last year they let me upgrade to the next account up from the basic.
However they have never let me have an overdraft or credit card because I declared bankruptcy in 2005 ...discharged in 2006 and since then I have managed to build up a decent credit rating.
I haven't changed over to the upgraded account as there isn't much point if I can't get a small overdraft facility, I may as well stay with my basic account.
My daughter is a single mum on benefits ( and my Carer ) and even she has a £100 overdraft on her Natwest account.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thank you

You most likely have a credit restricted select silver account.

I assume you will have a z marker on your profile which prevents you from getting credit.

You should get a copy of your Experian and Equifax credit report and ask the branch to forward it to the personal lending unit in view of having the marker removed.

close your account and re-open or switch to rbs you will be fine, I had no credit issues but a basic account for the joint account and I was told this. Low and behold they were correct
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Hi, not sure what happened there with your reply.
Could you elaborate on the z marker please?

    Many thanks

A z marker is applied to high risk customers to prevent them from getting lending facilities.

    Thank you.
I will go into my branch and sort it out.
  • So that's what a Z marker means? I always wondered what it means, I've seen so many accounts with it and no damn person could provide me with the answer!

Just to update: I spoke to a Natwest advisor via webchat this evening and she told me to speak to the Lending Dept.
They in turn told me to write to my branch and enclose a copy of the bankruptcy discharge notice, as 7 years have passed.
Hopefully they will sort this out for me.
I am disabled so not able to go into the branch myself, hence the webchat for advice.

    Thanks again

You have managed the last 7 years without debt - why do you want to get into it again now? Don't understand at all.

Sounds like a lot of work for very little gain.
Would you not be better moving to a better bank?

I just want the option of the £100 no interest overdraft, not to go into debt, but very occassionally my income and outgoings can overlap by 24 hours so it's just a protective buffer for those times...you wouldn't want me going to a Payday Loan company now would you ;-)
