I am 99% certain my FIL never received a pension other than from DFWP.

He didnt receive this one either. The pot is still there waiting to be paid out.
Also I have been through his bank statements myself for the last few years and there is no income other than DFWP and his dividend income (which is clearly marked).
Would we have expected to see some pension income in his bank statements?

no. If the pension had commenced then yes but the pension has not commenced (if would be an annuity then). Maybe these advisers were in discussion with him to get it changed to an annuity before he died.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Is it possible that your FIL belatedly remembered that he had taken such a policy and made enquiries?

I guess? He wasn't financially savy. However, he was a paper hoarder and he always left a paper trail...I would have thought there would have been a letter from Parker Kelly?

I would ring Aviva but they only work Mon to Fri and we only got the letter this morning..

    so puzzled..

It is possible that he had a policy, and perhaps through myriad takeovers the original company lost touch with him and he simply forgot about it?

Perhaps something happened to jog his memory and he made enquiries?

Or perhaps he is being confused with another policy holder?

Where was your FIL working when he was in his mid fifties?

No paperwork to suggest that. My FIL was nearly 82 at death - would it be normal for someone to contact him at say 70??? He always lived at the same address, always had the same phone number??

I will go and have another look in case I have missed something. My FIL kept every old document going ( he had all his old share certificates even when they had been superseded with new ones).

It is possible that he/his company opted him out in his 50s. It is possible that he forgot about it. There is no paperwork from Parker Kelly in my father's possession and he certainly never mentioned signing anything from Parker Kelly to Aviva.

    Puzzled..

Did it die with him?? Or is it there to be collected?

https://www.gov.uk/find-lost-pension The fact that this service ( and others) exist shows that people simply forget or companies close down or insurers are merged and records misplaced etc.....
