anyone have any good advice on York please?

I live outside Belfast and have never visited York but have heard it is beautiful. DH and I had planned a few days away in london before xmas but have now changed our mind and are thinking of york instead.

1) would it be easier for us to fly or maybe take a car on a ferry and drive there.
2) when is the xmas market on.
3) any recommendations to source hotel deals
4)any other advice really

Everything is in walking distance. If you go for a hotel, make sure it's one with parking. You'll only need the car if you want to explore the countryside around it.

And there are lots of buses to the other towns around that you might want to visit - Thirsk, Harrogate, Knaresborough etc. If you get a ferry to Liverpool, the train would surely be easier than driving?

Fly to Leeds. Train to York, no need for a car when you are there. Plenty of hotels close to centre, start with Tripadvisor.

    Xmas Saver!
I would say book early, a friend of mine just been for the weekend, and he said he had probs getting 2 ngts together - went throu tourist info - in the end they found a pub and he said for 2 of them was £85 per night b+b.

He visted York minister (which he said was amazing) and Museum of transport - loves his old trains xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • We (family of 4) stayed at the Guy Fawkes inn which is about 20ft from the main entrance to York Minster. We bought parking permits for the car parks for a week for around £26-00 (discounted). We spent the whole week walking around York and would def do it again.

The GFI is not cheap but a great base for exploring York..

York is absolutely wonderful, everything is within walking distance, visit the Museum, its a must. Google York and it will show everything, including special offers. there the only downside I wouldn't waste your money on the Yorvik centre, its absolute carp and a rip off.

As another poster said, fly to Leeds and train to York. No hassle of driving/parking and you definitely don't need a car to travel in York

I don't live too far away and we visit often, best place in England lol.
I guarantee you a wonderful stay.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • If you drive look out for the farm on the M62 - the motorway runs thought the middle of it. You do not need your car to get around and parking is difficult and expensive.

If you fly to Leeds / Bradford you will need to get the bus from the airport to the train station (about 40 mins) and then the train to York. It might be easier to fly to Newcastle and then get the train to York from there.

    Places to visit include :
    The Minster
    The Treasurer's House
    The Castle Museum
Christmas Angels on Low Petergate (a shop that sells Xmas items all year round)
The oldest pub in York (from 1644) Ye Olde Starre Inn
    Barley Hall
The Roman Bath pub to look at the Roman remains in the cellar
    Walk around the city walls
    The Railway Museum
Betty's Teas Rooms (very expensive though)
    The Shambles

My main advice is read up a bit about the history first as we have lots of hidden gems so a guide book is a must. You will be able to get one from the tourist information shop. Also, buy a map or you will get lost down the alleyways in the town centre.

Sorry, I split the post as my browser kept crashing and I kept having to re-type everything.

There is also the 'pub that floods' the King's Arms on King's Staith look out for the flood markers on the wall. Or maybe try The Golden Fleece our most haunted pub. The ghost walks are fun too.

If you like pizza then try Pizza Express on Museum Street. It is in a grade 1 listed building and it is beautiful. Make sure you use the toilet to have a nosey (don't know about the gent's by the ladies are stunning).

If you like your beer then a visit to a York Brewery pub is a must (or even to the brewery itself) Try The Last Drop Inn (last drop as in hanging and not last drop in the glass) or The Three Legged Mare (known as The Wonky Donkey).

Avoid visiting in a race meeting weekend as hotels will be very busy.

If you have children then Yorvik Centre and DIG are a must.

visityork.org has lots of good info.

I'd fly to manchester less messing around as you can get a train from the airport then Leeds Bradford

We've stayed in the marriott a few times on a direct bus route into town

    Must dos

    Minster
    Railway museum
    York castle museum
    Walk the walls

There is loads to do eat or shop so shouldn't be an issue for a great trip

If you ferry from Belfast you shouldn't be anywhere near the m62

    M6 - A66 to Scotch Corner then A1
