Reporting carriageway defects to the Council

Hi all

This is probably a naive question, but what the hell.......

What are people's experiences in respect of the above?

I ask because I have in the last six months reported a number of potholes to my local Council - Surrey. In about 50% of the cases, the defect was repaired. But in just as many instances I was told the carriageway was repaired and nothing had been done.

In one example, I reported the defect twice, to be told on both occasions that it had been fixed, and it's still the same.

The last straw was a report I made at the weekend. 500m of road was in poor condition and needed resurfacing. I drove that very same road yesterday evening and it was the same - this afternoon I get an e-mail saying it's been fixed. Pretty unlikely.

Makes me wonder why I bother.

Why not take photos then you can send them to the council to show what the repair looks like.
  • I reported a pothole in an "A" road to Surrey County Council over a year ago, after 6 months they e-mailed me back to thank me, say they had inspected it and put on their "holes to do " list. It is still awaiting attention.
The only thing is that if it causes any damage to vehicles or persons they will be liable as they have not attended to a defect there were aware of. I have a copy of their defect notice to hand to anyone who is affected

If they are, let's be kind, "misplacing" email notifications, I doubt they will be take much notice of photos.

Plus, I notice these as I drive my car over them. I don't intend to stop my car, often in dangerous locations, to take a photo when the Council isn't going to do anything with it anyway.

  • Funny that this thread has popped up, as only today has my council posted a link on their Facebook asking for people to report potholes and other things via an online form.

I've done it a few times, and found everything I've reported has been fixed within days, sometimes hours.

I reported pot holes, and street lights not working.

Same here. My latest pothole report via my Council's online form got fixed within 24h which really surprised me actually, though it was a reasonably large area around some manhole cover that had sunk 5-6 inches and was fairly nasty with no way of avoiding it if cars were coming the other way and had been there for weeks - they just tarmacked over the lot, manhole cover and all :rotfl:

Sounds like it's just my Council which employs liars.
  • Hull City Council are absolutely awful, where I live:

    Potholes are not fixed.

Street lights are out, sometimes 3 or 4 in a row. A floodlight over a zebra crossing was out for months making it difficult to see pedestrians from a distance.

Bus Shelters are left in a right mess (not JCDecaux ones, but council ones).

Box junctions are badly faded (although I think most people ignore them regardless).

All reported. Mostly ignored, until re-report by email copying in all the relevant and opposing councillors, then told it will be fixed in xx days, still not fixed, then either fixed to a poor standard eventually or never fixed.

What I question is why councils don't seem to do any audit of their own, I feel like unless I report the street lights/ bus shelters they stay like it forever.

Wiltshire council (where we live) are terrible too.....

Several neighbours have reported issues with large number of potholes in a main (A) road nearby......the council have done nothing since these were first reported about a year ago. The houses are known to vibrate from the ground upwards as a result and although these properties have been standing in excess of 200 years so are unlikely to fall down, it can't be doing them any good.

I just tried reporting it via the link in this thread, but maybe due to using my iPad it won't work for me. The blooming council website is often down - today, for example, the highways section is out of action.....typically
