How on earth does one choose a tablet?

  • The 1st gen Ipad came out in 2010, thats a long time ago in tech terms. If I were spending £200 I would want something a bit more recent.
I did a lot of research when I bought my Nexus 7 but you want a 10 inch so my knowledge is now exhausted.....

Presumably for similar reasons as why a Dyson costs more than a Tesco own brand vacuum and a Ferrari costs more than a Fiesta....

Well Macman, I don't know what I want. I only know what I want to do with it. I travel, and would like to be able to get on the net on the train or stations, where there is no wifi. I heard that you can get a contract for £5 a month. That is another thing I know nothing about, and will have to research. When I get to wherever I am going, I'd like to pull the keyboard out of my suitcase to make typing emails easier. They aren't very heavy, I just saw one made specially for the Samsung Galaxy. I don't need the keyboard during the journeys.

I will not be using the machine at home at all. Abroad I would generally connect to the hotel's wifi.

Had a look at netbooks and ultrabooks and they are heavier than tablets.

Macman, I looked at the Google Nexus 10 there is one on ebay at £300 but it does not list 3G. I guess that means it is one without.

Even when you add the weight of the keyboard and USB cable (if not using Bluetooth)?
3G reception is not at all reliable on trains...all those pesky cuttings and tunnels...
And you won't get much in the way of mobile data for £5 a month, maybe 250MB? If you're looking to stream video to it then regularly then you'll need much more than that: £10 per month and up. There is no current 3G version of the Nexus 10-the new model should have that option.
Have you considered something like a MacBook Air?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Good point, on my train commute I only have 3g reception for certain parts of the journey, probably less than half the time. This doesn't bother me as I now know where the black spots are so I just play a game when I am on those bits of my journey.
As for a sim look up ovivomobile, pay them 15 quid one off and get 750mb a month, the only thing is you have to watch the occasional advert when using the web.

Its on the vodafone network so if anyone lives in a poor vodafone reception area then not much in getting 1. I have mine in an old phone and I use it as a sat nav.

    For the SIM, Giffgaff

    Uses O2 network.

As for the tablet, I can't recommend one that's cheapish, I bought Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 years ago, still going and does fine (mine has the water mark 'feature' though). I like it.
  • bundly, you could try John Lewis - they have knowledgeable staff and don't pressurise you into buying stuff (in my experience). Plus you will be able to try out some tablets and see how you like them. They have iPads, Samsungs, and cheaper ones too so they do have a range.

If all you want to do with the tablet is browse the internet, send emails, watch iplayer (and 4OD and itv player etc), play music, and you aren't planning to use many apps, then I think any "proper" tablet (eg not a £100 piece of tat) would work. If you really really need a keyboard then you might like to look at the Microsoft Surface tablets (which I know very little about btw, but I have read reviews saying the keyboard/case thing is great), but leave it until after Monday - they are announcing new versions then, so I assume the current ones will get a price cut.

    Thanks for the further replies.

Humphrey I don't live near a John Lewis, unfortunately. I have only PC World near me.

    They don't have 3G.
