I hope you are not referring to me as gullible :o As I said in the post above I have no option but to pay someone. It will be interesting though to see what the comparison is between this one and a normal wireless programmable stat. Personally I can't see the advantage of being able to control your heating away from home, why would anyone want to be able to do that? It did have one good feature if you have older children who will be home alone whilst you are away, it alerted you via text if the heating had been turned up (glad they weren't available when I still lived at home lol)

No certainly not, you have stated that you thought that it was expensive and you do not need the extra functionality.

BG should at least offer potential customers what they require, rather than try to rip them off.

I must be honest it is an experience having a BG engineer. I had to sign a piece of paper to say I understood that my boiler is not up to current standards and whilst it is not dangerous they recommend I get it upgraded to the lasted requirements!! I don't think so, it was installed to the required standards at the time of insulation and that will be fine for me, it will not get replaced until it is worn out. I have had quite a few independent plumbers look at it over the years and not one of them has thought it necessary to point this out.
  • without feezing our bits off & 3.5 hrs in the evenings until just after we all go to bed. The rest of the time we layer up & use blankets to watch TV. The only exception to this is when it is REALLY cold, blizzard like & snowing outside.QUOTE.

DO what we do in winter, only when its cold though, we all sit round a candle around the coffee table! it really does save us a lot of money.
My dad sometimes lights it when it gets extremly cold!!!.

What i did was put valves in to shut the heating off completley upstairs , as the heat was rising anyhow & worked a treat.
But we moved to a bungalow, and even though there was tvrs on all rads i still put a room stat in & last to bed turns the dial down.

IT COSTS ME A PINT OF BEER A DAY OR LESS TO RUN MY CENTRAL HEATING ALL YEAR round , we are retired.

A programmable stat doesn't need you to remember to turn it down at bed-time, nor for someone to get up early in the freezing cold to put it on again. The other big advantage is that should you feel the need for a little more heat then you can turn it up and it will turn itself back down again when the next programme time comes round (my wife has a tendency to wind it up when I'm not there and sometimes it could be forgotten for several days - can't happen with a programmable stat)

You don't need a gas fitter, any electrician or competent DIY'er could easily fit it for you in minutes.

I don't know any electricians or DIY'ers who I would be able to ask I'm afraid.

Are you trying to make some point?

So are you not aware that BG engineers get kickbacks for generating sales leads then?
It's not difficult to find a competent independent electrician. No need whatsoever to use BG unless you want to pay about 40% more.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

No I was not aware beforehand but I did gather he was on commission, I am not stupid I can tell when someone is trying to sell me something rather than just advising of the cost. I would disagree, it is difficult to find an independant tradesman who is prepared to take on a small job like this. I have had trouble with getting tradesmen out in the past just for little jobs.

I asked BG to quote as they were here anyway fixing my boiler.

It's pretty much the same price as the old standard wireless so they are just offering a far superior product. I quite like being able to turn mine of if I decide to go to the pub on the way home or turn it on ready for when I get back if I'm early.
As for being 40% more than an independent I am curious who does provide this product installed for 120...please enlighten me mm.

Ah someone who has one great. I am going to get another quote for a standard one then start a new thread asking who has a BG one and what they think of it, if they use the remote functions etc. I am expecting it to be more expensive and at the moment I have no need for the extra function as I am at home most of the day. However this will not always be the case and as the stat should last a good few years I will need to decide if it will be worth paying extra for the function as I might use it in the future. That decision will mainly be based on how much extra the BG one is and I don't know that yet. Will update and start new thread when I get quoted for a standard one.
