Children's birthday money question please!

  • My inlaws always stop giving gifts once the kids reach 18 but give a bigger monetary 'send off' gift for their 18th birthday (not suggesting you do that but maybe now is a good time to drop hints that you'll be stopping at 18?)[/QUOTE]

This is what I do. We have 17 nieces/nephews.

We agreed early on in our marriage that we would be giving a larger pressie on 18th birthdays and that there would be no pressies after that.
  • Thanks everyone. On realising I have enough frozen meals at home to bring in for lunches all next week, I've bitten the bullet and put the £20 in. Once my other nephew has his £20 in October, it's a tenner a time from then on!

Yes, you are right, I should have called TIME at 18. My niece just turned 19 at the end of July. I think I will tell her she managed to get one extra, but from now on it stops at 18th birthday, with something special for their 21st :)

PS my niece did get an extra for her 18th - she went off on her first girls holiday abroad so I gave her 50 euros.

I'd tighten my belt and put £20 in but that's probably why I'm in debt :rotfl:

That's exactly what we've done. My DH has an enormous family so the number of nieces, nephews etc. is massive. We still give gifts for 'big' birthdays though. One niece is 40 on Saturday and I'm going to give her £40 to treat herself.

To answer OP's question, I'd try my hardest to make it £20 each until they're all 18 then just cards except for big birthdays. It'll be hard but worth it IMO even if it gets there a little bit late.
