Mobile phone insurance?

Hi everyone, I hope I've put this in the right place!

I'm basically looking to see if I can get a better deal on my mobile phone insurance, I signed up to a new contract on Sunday, and I also took out their own insurance at £5.99 per month. I've got upto 14 days to cancel without charge.

This includes accidental damage and cover for calls if my mobile is lost etc. I'm just wondering though if it would be cheaper to go through an independant insurance company to cover the phone instead? I don't know anything about these things!

If someone could give me a bit of advice I'd be very grateful as I could really do without paying an extra £5.99 on top of my line rental for 18 months.

Thanks in advance!

I've never insured my phone - seems such a waste of money if you're just a little bit careful. I get an upgrade every year or so, keep the old phone - so that if I break the new one, I still have an old one I can use until I'm due another upgrade. Have saved hundreds of pounds over the years.
